Default Backing and line?

Hey all,

I just have a couple of questions in regards to my current setup. First, I don't have any backing on my rod. I believe I have floating line, as it well... Floats. Do I really need backing? I haven't reached the end of my line EVER when casting, so I'm wondering if I need to remove all of my line and then add some backing then add the line I removed.

Second, my fly line gets thinner as I cast more out. Do they make line tapered? I reeled it on directly from the spool it came on, and it ended up being thicker on the hook end and thinner at the reel end. Do I need to reverse it?

Just a few things that make me wonder. Can't wait to chuck some bugs!

Jeff

Your line is backwards and you should get some backing on.

What kind of line did you buy and where?! They should have put it on for you...

Yes you should put on backing! Depending on the type of reel you have (regular arbor or large arbor) and the type of fishing you will be doing (trout or pike) you should have about 250 yards of 20 lb or 30 lb dacron respecfully).

Yes line is tapered! The "running line" is thinner then the body/head

Think of it this way (approx):

Typical profile for a WF (Wieght Forward line):

-------------------------------==============-----
70 feet 20 feet 10 ft

Typical profile for a DT (Double Taper line):

-------=============================-----------

20 feet 60feet 20 feet

See here for an exact WF line profile (click line profile box):

And for DT:

Agree with the backing, it's not casting that you will need it for, it's when a fish decides to run longer than the length of your fly line that you will want it.

Your line is not backwards, you are describing a standard weight forward taper. This is what most combos come with when purchased.

Ya you had better get some backing on, A lot of the time you may not need it but one of these days when you get a huge fish on and it pulls out all your fly line and your left with nothing you will really regret it.
And your fly line is no on backwards, like said above that is just a typical weight forward fly line.

You should get some backing on there. If you ever get a 5 pound fish on in some current it could easily run the 30 yards that your fly line is in length.

You don't need 250 yds though. 100 should do it. Depending on what reel you have 250 probably won't fit.

Have fun out there!!

Do yourself a favour and be VERY picky with the type of line you use for whatever type of fishing you do most ...talk to the people at wss theyd set it up proper for ya .... use good leaders and tippet I normally get 12 foot tapered leaders ...and get some backing and be dam sure its all tied on really good ... you never know when youll hook into a beast of a fish...you dont wanna be left teary eyed watching your 100 dollar line swimming away for good lol .... I know I might cry lmao.

Oh and dont be cheap with anything to do with fly fishing ..you dont have to buy the most expensive ...but quality comes with a nice price tag ... it just makes it all so much easier to have quality gear
