Default Recommend me a target scope....

....looking for a scope for my .223. Distance will be 100, 200, 300, and if I can find a place, longer. Price needs to be under 1000.

The two that I am considering are MONARCH 3 6-24x50 SF Fine Crosshair https://www.nikonsportoptics.com/en/...crosshair.html

and a Busnell ELITE 6500 4.5-30x 50mm http://bushnell.com/hunting/rifle-sc...-4-5-30-x-50mm

I have used my brothers Bushnell Elite 6500 and am very impressed with it but have heard good things about the Nikon as well. Am thinking I want to stick with a simple fine or duplex reticle. Any thoughts or other offerings? This high powered stuff is new to me.

For $1000 I'd try to find a used Sightron S3 6-24, or maybe the newer Sightron S-TAC 5-20 which is running around $750 brand new.

I have the Monarch 5-20 on my T-3 in 223 and I am very pleased with it.

i have or have had both.

nikon:
i find they have terrible low light glass for my eyes and are horrendous to look through. even shade from a berm at the range made me unable to see my target.

bushnell elite 6500:
i have had quite a few of these they all seemed to track well enough and were repeatable.
i had parallax issues with every single one of them. some of them did not offer enough adjustment to be parallax free through my range of shooting others did.

i would go neither.

there was a suggestion for sightron for a budget target scope they're the ticket. their glass is acceptable (it's not nightforce), their tracking is repeatable and consistent.
my biggest complaint is the massive diameter of their objective lenses and not having too many options for smaller diameter objectives. the stac line has been filling this gap i guess.

Can anyone comment on the Sightron MOA reticle vs the duplex?

I have been using several Leupold VX 11 6 - 18 X 40 with fine duplex. They are relatively light (15oz) and can be had with regular or target height turrets. On white paper, 30 cal holes show up at 300M. Of course good warranty, serviced in AB.
When I asked a friend that competes in f-class, he told me he no longer runs Sightron.

Check the Nikon Prostaff 5 that I have for sale on this site. It's a 4.5-18x40 with side focus, the reticle is a fine crosshair with dot, has 1/8 moa adj + comes with a set of tall target knobs and a 4" sun shade and is NEW, never used. It was to go on a fast twist .243 but we went another route, the optics are very good and that's coming from someone who uses mostly S&B scopes.

Default Scope

That is a nice budget you have. No reason to spend it all though. Check out Nikon's 4-16x50SF BLACK X1000 IL X-MOA. Excellent glass and light gathering, 30mm tube,Illuminated MOA reticle and MOA turrets. A lot of scope for under $500. This scope caame out at Shot Show 2017 and has just hit store over the past 6 weeks. I have been using one for 2 months now and love it. I am using the MRAD version though. Definitely worth checking out.

Under a 1000 bucks I vote vortex viper hs and greater series of scopes. I like their reticle options and the glass is respectable for the price tag. Save up a couple hundred more and I vote the razor lh 3-15

Agree with this.

These are nice scopes and can easily do what the OP is asking.
I move mine from rifle to rifle. It lives on my varmint rig in springtime. I'll also put it on a rifle that I'm doing load development for. I also throw it onto a rimfire for long range fun.

If I remember correctly, the OP has an interest in rimfire rifles. With the correct rail, this scope, with its 67moa of vertical adjustment, will easily take you from 50 to 200yds using std velocity ammo. In theory, it will take you further, but IMO, 200yds is getting pretty far for 22LR.
Lots of scopes will work for this, but I really like the small eyebox on Leupolds. They work well with the high bolt lift on a cz.

My vx11 6-18x40 was the only leupold i ever hated poor eye relief dissapointing low light clarity and the only leupold i had fail started not holding zero sent it in and was given a vx3i 4.5-14x40 cds in return plus a $100 on my end happy with that scope

I also realize mine was a lemon and maybe not a good representation of that scope but that was my experience none the less

I am also very interested to try a sightron myself

So, I was able to look through a Nikon Monarch 6-24X50. It has a Nikonplex reticle which I thought was heavy. I found the contrast to be lacking a little but did not cross it off my list. Then I got the chance to look through a Sightron Slll 8-32 with a 56mm objective, liked this scope a lot, the turrets and focus adjustment are really, really nice. I would say the glass is a small step up from the Nikon. Based on this look I bought a used Sightron Slll 6-24X50 off a member on the site. I should be here next week some time, I am looking forward to shooting with it. Thanks for the suggestions and the PM's that were sent my way, I appreciate everyone's help.

Default Scope

Another Nikon option is the MONARCH 5 4-20x50ED SF Nikoplex Custom XR Turret. I have this scope on a .308 with the custom turret and it is Spot On. I have used it to shoot 600 yards on 10 inch steel plates so far. The MONARCH 5 ED glass is incredibly clear. I like it so much I bought the MONARCH 5 3-15ED for my .300 Win deer rifle. Definitely worth checking out.

I checked out the specs on this scope, and am very impressed with the feature set,
particularly the side focus and matching MOA reticle & turrets, (and no BDC or duplex).
The price point and warranty are very attractive.
I will be seriously considering one as a 22LR training scope, but they may be VERY suitable for a low cost long range rifle.

Good Luck, YMMV.

There's an outfit in Calgary called "Trace Scope Repairs". Not many have heard of them. They sell used scopes that they've fully refurbished, and I believe that they can install custom turrets and even change out the reticle. I've purchased an old Weaver T6 target scope from them for 200 bucks. Steel tube, target knobs, parallax adjustment, wicked fine reticle, very clear glass. Couldn't be happier as I doubt one could find such a fine scope for so little $.

The company used to be located in Calgary. The owner sold it to his daughter and son in law I believe, at least that is what I was told when I met them at the gunshow. The new owners are located in Cochrane.

I shoot skeet with the founder and former owner of the company. Quite an interesting person to get to know, I have heard a lot of his history over the last couple of years.

Same here. I've had and still do. Right from the Crossfire II to the Viper and Razor. I've never experienced any of the problems that I sometimes hear about and never had to use their warranty. All of the ones I've had hold zero and dial in to expectations. I also have had good results from Leupold and I especially like Sightron which are quite a bit more $ than Vortex. I also run an old school Weaver and an old Baush & Lomb that I like very much. And in closing, I'm not a fan of Bushnell, but that's just a matter of personal preferences.

Most of us have (or had) a few Bushnell scopes, they are what they are.

Bushnell is one of the few brands still building scopes with a Mil-Dot reticle and 1/4 MOA turrets.
Some ads even brag about having a 'true Mil-dot' with 1/4 MOA turrets.

IMHO, best utility for long range use requires accurately calibrated turrets and reticle in similar MOA/MOA or MIL/MIL units.

Many 'MIL-Dot' reticles are not accurately calibrated, and are more properly called 'Mystery-Dot.
I submit that reticle calibration should be verified before serious use.

I prefer calibrated hash marks, but would accept MOA-Dot & 1/4 MOA turrets.

Good Luck, YMMV.

Anybody ever use a fixed 35 power leupold for target shooting?

I haven't, but i would think that when shooting in heavy mirage you would be at a disadvantage if you couldn't dial it back a bit.
