Default Feb 10-22 mexico fishing back with pictures

Happy new year to all. Now that hunting season is over Its time to start getting my surf fishing stuff ready for Mexico. Thanks for others posting tackle they have had success with i picked up a few new lures to try this year. i will be heading down for the above dates to Bucerious and hope to fish every morning before the wife and kids are wake. Last year i fished 9 mornings out front of the resort. With only average success I want to be a bit more adventurous this year and rent a scooter and fish a couple other location within a 30 min drive mostly up near Punta De minta. If anyone is down at that same time and want to get together and fish. Send me a PM or come find me just at sunrise i will be between Bucerious and nueavo vellarta in that open beach area. Some of the new areas I would like to try a ibmight have to hike it so a partner to come with would make a bit more comfortable if something was to happen.

Good luck fishing to all fellow AO members

The wife an I will be down just south of Punta de Mita at the Grand Palladium 16-23rd and the fishing gear is coming. A scooter/car rental adventure was on our list to do so may be we can work something out.

this is our first time back there in 15 years so I don't have any real local knowleage

I am no expert on the area but i have done a bunch of surf fishing and kayak fishing when i am there. There is a couple little beaches with rocks around punta that look great and there looks like a trail going to the north shore of the Punta de mita point. Also a couple spots between la cruez and punta along the 200 highway that a guy could walk into from the highway. The sand beach along the resorts is pretty slow fishing and busy with people walking while your casting guy has to check his back every cast. If you have kids the la cruez marina is fun to jig from and catch small perch fish.

I would take one of those and call the whole week successful.

And speaking of kayaks, I am guessing there is a place to rent a fishing yak

Great photos! Love the variety of smaller fish. It's not always about the giant marlin!

I'll need to get my picture off the camera, fishing by the palladium was tough but that was mostly due to the location , at high tidewe were stuck on the resort. But the upside is I did actually see jacks and roosterfish, just could not get them to bite. a number of time I was casting a boiling bait fish

One morning I had a massive amounts of bites I just could not keep a fish hooked up, I suspect they were needlefish.

The only fish I caught on an artificial was a puffer fish.

The last day I did chuck bait and manage to land a few snapper and something I would think is a sea bass.

For next time,

more bomber slab spoons, they casts like bullets and if you swap out the plain treble for a single bucktail they have a decent high speed action.

More soft plastics , all I has was 2" grubs but I think Carolina rigged soft plastics have some potential for the close in fish like snappers.

Bring tools and or a backup reel sand get everywhere

Next time we are thinking about Ixtapa

Raw what was the beach like around your resort we like the PV area

I’m going to bump this back up. My family and I will be heading back to PV area feb l. I will be fishing every morning again. This year we will be staying closer to PV near the paradise Village marina. I will be trying off the beach casting but this area doesn’t look like that’s going to be best, next option will be try to catch some fish off the rocks at the marina, couple morning trips to punta mita for some cliff fishing and if I can manage to pack it in I will be bringing my inflatable SUP Bote Bugslinger to try some deeper fishing.
Let me know if anyone is going earlier to report on fishing or going the same time I am maybe we can smack some water.

Where in Mexico did you go?

Some of those fish look like the ones I catch in Port A and Corpus Christi. I assume you were on the gulf side of Mexico and not pacific from the fish species.

Beauty catches, go for some blacktip as I think they are swimming in large numbers now. If you can, try using a cast net to get some mullet, and put it on a nice circle hook and chuck it out past the 2 sand bar. If you are brave enough try chucking it behind the 3rd and hold on!

happy, where are you fishing? Right on resort beach or going down to Punta de Mita? Also, what weight gear, etc.? I've fished when I've been there but pickings were pretty slim for me (few fish I couldn't identify and didn't eat). 4 piece 17lb travel rod with 12lb test on a decent Shimano spinning reel is all I've used, but thinking about putting together a dedicated travel rod package for beach ocean fishing.... (maybe I already have it?)

All these fish are from PV area the little guys are from the pier in sayulita, needle fish was off the rocks near punta de mita, jack cravelle was right out front of Bucerios public beach.

I tried so hard to catch rays they are everywhere swimming and jumping but I could never hook one.

Correction the the small fish with the kids are from the marina in la Cruz not sayulita.

Wish I was the now. With all this snow and cold and archery season over all I can think about is huking topwaters into boiling fish.

All I use as a surf fishing rod was a 12ft 3 piece Penn rod and reel combo with 20lb braid and 12lb flouro leader (3-4ft). I use those texas surf rigs that are like heavy duty pickerel rigs haha. Can catch almost any fish in the ocean with that setup.

Anybody fish from the beach/shore in Sayulita?

We went last year and chartered a little panga out to do some mid-sea fishing. We filled a cooler will mackerel and Chili verde in about 20 mins. We then wen5 after the mahi mahi. We both hooked up with one, the wife brought hers in while mine broke the knot off.

We are going back this year Jan 3-10, and I’d like to fish every day from shore in addition to another 4 hour panga trip.

I just gotta figure out how to lay off the tequila enough to get up early in the morning.

Sayulita will be awesome fishing. I was in the area the locals had a huge net they pulled from a boat back up into the shore. The amount of Mackerel was unreal and a few smaller jacks. Might be tough to find a nice area away from the swimmers and surfers. With all those mackerel I would try get out in a kayak and use a subiki rig. I may try fishing out in guayabitos a couple times this year
Let me know how it goes on your trip and what your learned works it will help me out when I go to guayabitos in feb

One thing the vacationing fisherman need to remember is that winter is the off season , but that said I have entertained myself for a couple of trips now and it’s easy enough to have some fun. You need to be prepared to fish for what is there at the time. Bring 2-3 oz sinkers and pickerel rigs (or the PC equivalent 😊 ) bait always works. If sierras are around 1.5-2 oz castmasters or deadly dicks but shiny , silver and able to work in current most Mexican fish like speed, the serious surfcasters are using reals that pick up 50+ inches of line per turn just to give an idea.

One new thing I saw last year when I was in San Jose Del Cabo was snow birds with casting bubbles and hoochies, the only bait around was little with things and the hoochies matched up pretty nice. Another thing from last years trip was to get out before sunrise basically I hit the beach 5:30 or so and lure fishing was done by about 7:30. It worked great for us since I got to fish and still meet up with the wife for breakfast.

Though I have not tried it yet but I suspect a big buzz bomb could be a thing to try.

I have made and bought a number of the typical roosterfish/Jack type lures and have yet to even get a bite on one. But that said if there are rocks around you want some sort of popper.

Good info, we have been going to Los Cabos/San Jose for the last 6 Years always in February, some success mostly on bait and sinkers. It is sure fun trying to catch some fish. I think we are going to switch it up and go to Puerto Vallarta this year!

We were in the PV area 2 years ago and at least I did see some roosters and jacks in the surf.

Something to watch out for is the resort we were on was landlocked at high tide so I was basically stuck on the 200 yards of resort beach until the tide dropped.

And that week high tide was around daybreak all week and I only managed one first light fish and I was still basically swimming around a rocky point , not the smartest move since the Pacific will eat you given a chance and I was alone.

I will post back here for sure.

I’m going to try to book a panga trip for the second morning I’m there, I’ll ask my guides for any shore fishing tips. When we were gathering baitfish last year, there was a guy fishing off the rocks who seemed to be doing pretty well. The guides said they always fish with live bait. Not many surfers or swimmers at 7am thankfully.

What are you running for rods and reels? What # test? Are you just using your freshwater gear? I want to buy a big 13’ surf rod, but it’s tough to justify spending $200 on a rod/reel combo that I’d use one week a year.
