Default 6.5-300 weatherby

Im looking into getting a weatherby Mark V is a 6.5-300 caliber. Anyone have this caliber? Before i purchase it id like some in-site on this caliber in the field on big game animals and also brass availability as i do reload. From what im reading its extremely fast and flat. Thanks in advance

I know a guy who has one and he loves it, talks about it ALL the time! I overheard him at the range the other day tell someone it is 1.5" high at 100 yards and 1.5" low at 300, I'd call that pretty flat!

I have no idea about component availability.

It's to bad they don't add more of there calibers in the vanguards I'd love a 270 wby or 7mm wby

I first read abbout the 6.5/300 WTHBY for 1,000 yard shooting in a handloader magazine article in the 700's and it intrigued me then
That cartridge would have to bee doing some crazy velocity to be 1.5 high at 1000 and 1.5 low at 300
I have experimented with some pretty large cased 6.5's as well as small cased wildcats and just tried to get the same trajectory on my computer- couldn't do iit.
Can you talk to your buddy and find out what he is running foorr components for me?
I may just build another long range plinker!

I cant imagine what the barrel life would be??
Ive read that even the 6.5 Creedmoor can be relatively short? I hope not. I just bought one. Lol

I've done some reading on this cartridge ...... and just like you would expect from Weatherby, it shoots flat with a point blank (6" assuming they mean +/- 3" in the article) to almost 350 yards, hits like a truck and has been tested to well below sub-moa shooting factory ammo out of the box.

I guess if you "only had one Weatherby cartridge" this might be a good choice - if you can afford the ammo .... lol.

I have a 257 and 300 Wby - this one slots nicely between the two - with the 257, of course, having a much smaller case (less punishing to shoot).

I might just have to get one .... just gotta sneak it into the house ....

I'd imagine this might not be a good candidate if barrel wear is an issue .... I'm not sure too many people have had one long enough to find out yet.

Barrel life in those big/medium cased small bores, is something you want to consider if you do not want too swap barrels very often!
The Creedmore is a long life case compared to the big boys!
Imagine a 6.3/338 Lapua or Jefffery along with the Weatherby??!!

I've been carrying one since they came out with it. Very happy with the performance. It's accounted for an elk, a moose, an antelope and some wild pigs and so far nothing has gone further than 20 yards. I'm loading the 142 gr. Long range accubond now at 3400 fps. It stays sub minute to at least 300, as far as I've shot on paper. Reliable hits on my gong to much further. I've profit river has been a good source for brass and I've seen it other places as well recently.

[QUOTE=SlightlyDistracting;3667740]I cant imagine what the barrel life would be??

barrel life= lets say 700 rounds and its done.. when your using a rifle with credentials like this, your not going to take this to a range every other weekend and run off 50 rounds a day. once your load is found you start hunting, and stop reloading. 700 rounds is a lot more hunting than several lifetimes of joe average.
and if you burn one up, a new barrel is a badge of honour.
there are hundreds of calibers that great for hi volume shooters, weatherby is like a quarter mile dragster use it wisely it will give back trophies.

I can push a 127LRX to 3540ish from a 26 nosler, a 6.5-300 might make another 50fps. Just playing with some numbers- sighted in 1.5" high at 100 I would be 1.6 low at 300, thats pretty darned close!

A 120ttsx could be pushed a touch faster, that would get you there. If I was going to play at long range plinking I would look at the CED bullets now that they are available in canada.

Using 3600fps and the 127gr LRX, I am seeing 1.5" high at 100 and 2.2" low at 300. That is assuming that you can safely reach 3600fps with that bullet. Using the weatherby data, at 3531fps it comes out at more like 2.6" low at 300. Personally, I find that the 300wby case is pretty much maxed out with a .284" bullet, and it offers very little advantage with a smaller bore. I found the same thing when comparing the 7mmRUM and the 7mmstw, once you reach a certain point, more case capacity adds very little velocity.

I wouldnt go to the 6.5-300, the 26 is likely too much of a good thing already. Very picky to load for, fairly limited powder selection too. The numbers I put are based on my current conditions, and I live at 1100m which will give a bit of difference in the numbers. The velocity/bc from my 26 has been trued up so my numbers would be pretty spot on today, at my location.

To those shooting the lighter bullets, my mistake:
On the big cased cartridges I use 140 grain bullets for the most part , so I was naturally trying to figure out how a person could get that kind of velocity and trajectory.

I think in the 6.5 the 140's make the most sense, I just could not get them to group as well as the 127's. The 142's were ok, the chinchaga 150 and 160 were terrible in my 26, but shot great in my 6.5-284. The 129 LRAB in my rifle you would be better off tossing rocks, the groups may have been better. I think that the overbore cartridges are finicky, toss just about any bullet in a 308 and it seems to shoot ok. Do that in the 26 and I would be lucky to hit the broadside of a barn.

I think my favourite 6.5 is the Mannlicher Schoenauer, great cartridge that runs on the slow side compared to the modern jobs , but is a very accurate rifle/cartridge combination with anything from 120 too 160 grain bullets and is a deadly killer.
The 6.5X55 swede is another, although I really enjoyed the AI version I owned as well.
The 6.5WSM is likely as big as I would want to goo, case wise from my experience with them.

I heard that Berger Bullets brought out a 150 or 155gr 6.5 bullets.

And it is very high in BC.

The issue with the VAnguard may be unfortunately is it will most likely come with a 24" barrel like the other Weatherby calibers, this is a waste and will diminish the performance of the 6.5 300 w, just my thoughts.
