Well it felt like 10 seconds but it was probably closer to 10min. Little(big) bugger snapped my Orvis 8wt.

Nice! I was going to write comparison to getting "lucky" for the first time, but thought the better of me!

Default Congrats

Very nice pike. Especially for a first.
If you don't mind me asking, which section of the Athabasca ? Not looking for your fishing hole just upstream or downstream of what town. Thanks

Nice catch! If you're gonna break a fly rod, that's the way to do it.

Way north of Fort McMurray, we have a few spots that always produce large pike and tons of Walleye. Nothing secret about them but you gotta use the right gear and find the right water. We've had plenty of nights where we pull 30 or 40 fish and guys 40' away get maybe 1 or 2.

Beauty of a pike! River pike are strong! They can get pretty big too. Sorry to hear about your rod. I'm sure Orvis has some sort of warranty?

Here is mine from the NSR:

Thanks for replying . I have yet to figure out the big river up here. Only goldeye and walleye thus far. Catch quite a few pike on the fly at Winifred but no river pike yet.

Yea my guess was around 18-20lbs. I didn't weigh it as I don't have the proper cradle to weigh fish that size, I also forgot my tape measure in the truck so didn't get an accurate length and girth measurement but I would guess 38-40"

Thanks for the pix Kb. That Sabre Tooth Salmon has to be at least 20 pounds.

Ship that rod back to Orvis and get a new one.

Even an old one. I broke a 21 year old Clearwater and had the newest version back within 90 days.
