Default Shooting grouse with large caliber rifle?

Not even sure if this is legal but my gramps always told me your not a real hunter till you can take a grouses head off with a large caliber rifle. Anyone else do this when then don't have a shot gun or 22 handy ?

Waste. Must be awfully desperate if your going to shoot a grouse with a 300 winnie or something like that.

It's legal in Alberta, but neither myself or my hunting partners shoot grouse when we are hunting big game.

Asked myself this exact question yesterday morning as I looked at a fat grouse in a tree, having my .270 in my hands... figured a head shot was entirely do-able.

When the tags are all filled, you shouldn't still be hunting big game.

Cast bullet loads work well for small game -

I once shot a grouse with a .30-06 and my plan was to take off it's head but as I squeezed off it decided to fly and my bullet struck the grouse in mid-body and flight.

There was a very spectacular explosion of feathers and we did manage to recover one wing.

Some old timers would ague thsat you are not a hunter unless you can shoot them on the wing while they are flying through the poplars and jack pines!

Fill your boots if you want to, lots of people do it and it is perfectly acceptable.

If you feel you can do it with little chance of meat loss, shoot away and have fun.

But if you use a shottie when they are grounded, we're fighting

I know quite a few guys who have no peobloems taking head shots n grouse, and they do it quite often!
We used to take the muzzle loading rifles out with the sole purpose of grouse hunting!

I have shot a few heads off, grouse and a ptarmigan with my big rifle.

One grouse I hit a little low and the top of the breast meat was sort of a jelly like consistency.

I believe it was the "energy in the bullet transmitting shock" to the adjacent meat.

I apologize in advance if that comment derails this thread onto a bullet performance tangent.

My best ever Sharptail shot was at 107 y with 140 gr TSX out of 7 STW...
cut the neck half way through....I am 3" high on 100y with all my rifles so I aimed at the base of neck...

As to taking head off it was 10 y 338 Win Mag 225 Barnes TTSX.

No problem with that, as long as they are on the ground. In my case, with bird in a tree, I was thinking "this bullet is going to go and go and go... god knows where. Pass".

Do terms like "300 winnie" bother anyone else, just curious?

I've shot grouse this way in the past, not often but I have done it. Taken the head right off of one. One other grouse fell over never had a mark on it. The shot was less then 10 yards, not sure what stunned the other, might been muzzle blast, or the repercussion of the hit, not sure but it was stunned, picked it up and had to dispatch it by hand.
