Why do you warn about not using a nice boat? Are there shallow rocks in places? Because of boat launches?

Abraham is a man made lake, and underneath the surface there's still many rocky ridges, stumps, etc.. As well due to the shape of the mountains the wind just howls through there often creating sudden and deadly huge whitecaps. There is some decent fishing though if you know where to go (and where not to).

I have a video of the waves from last summer and if you didn't know any better you would think we were on the ocean.

The lake is very cold and very deep, i honestly would just fish from shore in the spring. There are large fish in that lake, but not worth killing yourself for. Unless you've been out there to experience the weather that sneeks up on you out of no where i would recommend not taking a boat out there. You'll end up at the bottom of the lake.

I've fished there with a Zodiac with a small outboard. I was just carfull and watched the weather coming in. It's a beautiful lake to fish the water is blue but very cloudy so you can't see the bottom anywhere. I managed to catch quite a few big bull trout.

I had my Zode out there and i think it's the only boat i would fish in on that lake. Zodiac would be by far the safest way to go.

The best time to fish the lake is in the winter time through the ice. Just need to make sure that you have water underneath the ice and February and March are the best times to go. Pulled a 23lb laker out of there through the ice 2 years ago

You can pick up a backroadmap book at your local fishing hole or map store or wherever you can find them. I attached a link below.

http://www.backroadmapbooks.com/shop...7/prairies-73/

Get the Central Alberta one, it shows trail systems and campgrounds around the lake. I don't believe you can walk around the lake. Its in the mountains and it's a really big lake, so if you do decide to walk around it..........pack a lunch, a short little (legal) shot gun & maybe some pen flares.

Its safe because u are only in 4 feet of water for the lake trout and u drill a test hole right at shore to the check the water level. If its still scary then u can tie yourself off. If the ice is frozen smooth with no evidence of caving then ur more than likely safe. There is usually 3-4 feet of ice in the winter time You just gotta know the lake and be very careful thats all. I have actually seen some people out in the middle of that lake in the winter with quads and even pick up trucks. Now that is not something I would try ever lol. Takes some serious you know what to do that.

Ice was almost off this year around April 15th or so. Water level was however very low (and probably varying) and could have contributed to early ice off.
