Default Middle Bow-fish species?

Let's say the MIDDLE Bow is Ghost to Carseland.
Suppose:
Upper Middle is Ghost to Bearspaw
Midde Middle is Bearspaw to 22x (city)
Lower Middle 22x to Carseland

I only fish the LM (generally) and see rainbows and browns, haven't targeted or caught anything else and the browns tend to be further upstream. I actually had a guy not believe I caught 3 browns down by Jansen's.

Anyway, what and where are you seeing different species?

I have seen lots of large suckers and pike downtown. I have caught good browns and rainbows throughout the city of Calgary. There are lots of whitefish as well.

I only fish the "LM", and I catch rainbows, browns, and whitefish on a regular basis. My most unusual catch was a brook trout, and I've heard of a few bull trout being caught as well.

Anywhere below bearspaw downstream should also include pike too. Mostly in backwater areas behind islands and swampy areas attached to the river. Few but definitely there. Burbot everywhere too.

UM- Lake White......realllllllllllllllllly. interesting. very interesting. any size? ghost LW's are usually pretty big. I wonder if it got through as an adult or juvenile.

How's the population of Bulls in the UM? I can't imagine it's very big.

Fish just below Ghost and you'll find lakers and lake whites. The lake whites are huge.

I live in Douglasdale and there is a pond by my house that fills up with pike during run off. There are also pike down stream of 22x bridge on the chaparral side where the sewer comes in.

Them Flames are gonna drive me nuts!!!

I assume "lakers" are lake trout?

I am relatively new to Alberta fishing but some of this info surprises me. Burbot in the Bow??..I thought just in still water. Lakers?? Pike to Bearspaw?? How many are we talkin' here? Once, once in a while, frequent?

Actually really good news, it's pretty cool to know the options and maybe do some experimenting on slow days.

if I read the regs correctly , that section has a bait ban. perch will be tricky to catch. that said there may be the odd monster striper.

MM caught rainbows, browns, cuttbows, brookies, bull trout, RMwhitefish,burbot,pike,3 species of suckers(back when worms were legal)and even 2 sculpins on the same day-never seen one since. The biggest change in the middle bow has been the dissapearance of Bulls /cutts and far fewer rainbows since the 60's and the exponential increase of Browns. We used to catch a brown about as often as we would catch a bull, cutty or brookie when I was a kid. I did see one laker pulled out at princess Island-must have been a big trip from Bearspaw over the spillway. It was a big one too-only one I have seen below Bearspaw in 45 years of fishing the bow. There are brook trout in the inglewood bird sanctuary which spawn in there. The odd fry probably makes it out to the river. I am suprised they have not done very well in the main river. They have been in there for over 30 years. I am not sure how they survived in the ponds there which were full of petrochemical compounds from the refinery. Tough fish.

Friends 10lbs pike right below the dam. we put it back in!
The weirdest thing i every caught in the bow right below the treatment plant, was a Turtle. about 4 or 5 inches across the back. when I got it in the net, it came off the sanjanworm. check it out for a bit I was so shocked . It was cold out and i didn't have anything to put it in so. I put it back ! LOL.

Default Sucker Hole

There is a hole where the Bow turns south just upstream from the bridge between Bowness and Montgomery. We used to call it the Sucker Hole because we caught suckers about 10 to 1 to the occasional trout. One night about 50 years ago, we were sitting around a dying campfire watching the swallows swoop down to the water catching some kind of bug near the water when something caught one of those swallows. Leapt right out of the water and crashed back down. Can't imagine what it was if it wasn't something like 10 pound pike! Sure surprised us - we talked about that for years.
