Post First Boat

Hi Everyone,

Recently bought my first boat. Though it has more than a few miles on it I got a great deal. I filled up the inside of the boat with water and found a couple leaks. With the season coming up I want to get everything done before it starts.

What does everyone use for sealing the bottom? I've read things online until I've almost gone cross-eyed.

Gluvit? I've heard works great but not UV resistant?

G- Flex?

JB weld?

5200?

Thanks in advance

Aluminum boat 14'
Mostly rivets and the bottom seams.

With the age of the boat I want to just put something over it to seal it.

Also seems to leak out of the keels

Leaks are drips, not pouring out

Use Gluvit on aluminum fishing boats to repair leaky aluminum seams and rivets. The cure rate has a long working time that allows penetration into cracks to seal and strengthen. Gluvit fills minor chips and pinholes, and is easily painted with most bottom or topside coatings and paints.

If you cant find the exact spot just to the general area and be done with it.

+2 on the gluvit- had a 14’ tinner that I refinished and used the gluvit on the inside and out side on all the seams - sealed it up
perfect...

This was my refurbishment of the “Swamp Donkey”.... a bit of work and inadvertently getting high off paint fumes but well worth it lol

On of my co-workers used a can of flex seal and his $200 boat (which was a leaky wreck) and now it's completely is dry.

He had leaky rivets, a seam at the front that was leaking from an unknown source and 2-3 cracks on the side of the hull that he sprayed on ............ to my utter shock ........... worked exactly as it said it would in those silly commercials.

FYI - that was 4-5 years ago and it's holding up still with no issues.

Follow any of these recomandations but make sure it is clean. Get rid of any paint on the aluminum by sanding and clean it with acetone before sealing.

you can hammer the rivets tighter, that wont fix cracks but will clean up the leaks along the rivet seams.

Thanks everyone - I picked up some G-Flex sealant and did some sanding this weekend. Sometime this week I'll use some degreaser and a scotch brite pad then hope for some warm weather so I can start sealing. The G flex recommended temp for curing is 20.

I'll update the thread once complete.
