In general how succesful is fishing for whitefish and especially burbot on the new ice????
Never fished for burbot, but would like to go to snipe or winagami for some day and night fishing in the next couple weeks.

Burbs can make for a great night of fishing. As soon as the ice is safe I am sure there will be no prob hooking into some.

I have never had much luck at Snipe for Burbot. I think I have only seen 2 in the last 6 or so years. Let us know how you do.

I do not remember ever seeing a Burbot out of Winagami. I have seen a few out of Sturgeon but I have also fished it the least. Best Burbot I have seen up in those parts has been in the Rivers for open water and probably Utikima or Peerless (quite a ways away from the area you are looking at).

Keep in mind you can not fish Snipe after sunset this time of year. You may want to check the regs as a lot of the lakes in that area are closed for night fishing right now, they do not open until Jan.1/10.

Also do not forget the hook size.

Thanx for the tips.
Read about the nighttime closures last winter , then forgot about it.
Have you targeted burbot at night on these lakes? Just wondering if a targeted night time approach might work after the new year

I have had some very late nights at Snipe and never seen a Burb come through the hole. Only ones I have seen there were caught in the daytime.

gummy if you went out, was the ice good and safe? I have caught burbs at sturgeon. only during the day though. I heard that Musreau Lake has had some huge burbs in the past.

Never managed to get out that way. Always something to do around home.
The ice north of fairview seems good, but I swung into Kakut lake south of Rycroft and drilled a hole, ice was maybe 3 to 3 1/2 inches thick. Not quite enough for peace of mind
