Default Fireplace stone finish

I am looking for some ideas to finish the fireplace at the cabin. Just drywall on there right now. I can replace with cement board if needed. I want something fairly easy to install. Any suggestions?

I would tape and paint then put a 6 inch row of tile around.

Don't have a pic handy but I had the same thing at my place. Went to kodiak stone Calgary and installed (Waterton river rock) turned out great. All in was around $400 dead easy to install. I will try to post a pic later.
I am sure there is something similar in E-town.

Lots of farms have piles of field stones along their fence lines. Great place to get free or really cheap field stone of all sizes. Talk to some land owners that have cropland.

The beauty of the manufactured ones is that the back is flat. Smear on some thinset and voila.

Check your local building supply that sells tile. Lots of split stone tile like products out there. Installs just like tile with no grout lines. 4 -5 different ones at Lowes.

Doing a similar project and found most of the man made ledgestone is around $10 2/ft The big box stores usually have real ledge stone around $6 2/ft theres just not much to pic from for color.
Seams the river rock look is gone.Compared to the ledge stone its easy to see why.
Real ledgestone i believe you can seal with a coating to give that gloss look, not sure if you can do it to the man made stuff.

In one our former homes we had that field stone/ boulders around our fire place, we didn't like it, it was too bulky looking for the space.

These were faux boulder with a flat back and super light.

Went to Northland construction and picked up some ledge stone which was supper easy to install and not that expensive either.

You can try Habitat for humanity re-store as well see if they have anything there.

You need to be careful if you use natural field stone or washed river rock. It weighs tons and you need to have built a special heavy duty footing, about 2 feet of concrete base to hold 10 ton weight.
