I used to use a Tacoma as a work truck reliable and good at accessing drill site but the seating position was uncomfortable for me (All the smaller Toyota's seem to have the seat too close to the floor) and the mileage was horrible for the size of the truck.

Payload is not just about suspension, but also strength of the frame. Everything is designed with a safety factor, so yes, you can overload it without any major breakdown, but if you happen to have such a breakdown, like a bent frame, you'll only have yourself to blame for that, and pay, cause your insurance won't.

As an engineer I often see people go over recommendation, it works most of the time, but when it doesn't..... my ass is safe, their bank account.... not so much.

I owned my first Toyota about 1970, that's also when I finished tech school and stared working on trucks for a living, still running independent repair shop, and I work on those cans everyday,,,

But Toyota does have a slight edge over the GM little bitty frankentruck ,

One of the last good Toyota 4x's

I just got rid of a 2013 Tundra with 47K on it. Gas guzzling pos for sure.

Went back to GM and could not be happier.

The resale on the Toyota trucks is not what it used to be. And no Tacoma is worth what the dealers are trying to rope you out of.

I replaced the battery on my 2007 Tundra last summer, and other than that nothing but scheduled maintenance for over 10 years. I owned three GMCs previously, and not one made it through the first year without at least one warranty repair. In a few years I will likely purchase another pickup, and unless something changes drastically, it will be a Toyota.

It all comes down to what you want to do with it. If you are going to rat bag it, taking it off road through and down nasty logging roads/ROWs then the Tacoma is better. If you just need a truck to haul oversize loads but will be mostly high way the Canyon is much more comfortable. I have 2 close friends who are Toyota mechanics, they see there fair number of Tacos. My dad has a Canyon and hasn't had to do anything beyond regular maintenance.

Neither have the payload capacity of a proper truck. Just can you can load can load 1500 pounds of people and equipment into them doesn't mean you should.

Wow some of you really hate small trucks. But as many have said, it is about the purpose. I tow a small trailer that is 5000 lbs loaded and have access to a couple of gmc 2500 that i can borrow from the inlaws if i wanna haul the trailer through bc or steep mountains.

The reliability is key here, i just hit 300k on my nissan titan and it is starting to get that diff whine. Other than that and regular maintenance , the truck has been solid.

Thats what i am looking for. As i will be keeping thiss truck for another 300k

This is why I went full size. 4 boys and car seats just don't fit.

If my choice is only a Taco or a Canyon then the choice is Taco.

But why settle for a 1/4 ton when I can get a 1/2 ton with more room and better mileage.

I started with a Ranger , then moved to a F-150 .

Times I miss the small truck....
Parking and Off roading

Aside from that my F-150 does what I need it to do.

With all of the Threads about the Tundras I went and looked at them a couple of weeks ago. I also looked at the Taco.

Awesome trucks and in a different life I would want one or the other,
But neither had all that I get in my F-150.

In that the space I have in the rear of the cab , with the seats folded up, and a flat floor.
And for me that was the one detail that is important.

Opinions on which one will vary from one person to another,
It always does.

Finding out what you need in the truck and getting that one ,
Will have you more satisfied with the purchase,
Then which brand is the better of the two

But I didn't buy a truck (of any size or brand), to worry about how much gas it uses.

If you're worried about MPG, buy a station-wagon...

I got a wagon , great car . But it drinks gas like my Spots car

I also had a Ranger, and after owning one for a few years, I went back to full sized trucks. The small savings in fuel, wasn't woth giving up so much interior room and cargo capacity. There were so many issues with my Ranger, that I went with GMC though. Then in 2007, I looked at the then new Tundra, and liked the fact that it had a full 6-1/2' box and real doors rather than the silly suicide doors that GMC and Ford were offering on their extended cabs. I have had zero issues with my Tundra, and when I look for a new truck in a few years, I will look at another Tundra. It would be nice if Toyota offered a locking rear differential, but I can live with out one easier than I can live with those silly suicide doors or a shorter cargo box.

My F-150 is the full 4door supercrew with the 6.5 box.

I didn't want to go with the longer truck, just to get four real doors, or a 6-1/2' cargo box..

It's all good as far as trucks g, they are all a piece of junk when they break!
Use 'em iin the proper places, however and some have advantages over others.
I would NOT want to try this with a little Toyota!

But then again, That big ol' F350 wouldn't make it halfway to where the this pic was taken of the little little 'Yota !

I drive a ford sporttrac....friend has a taco. we've had them for the last 5 years and I've had no more trouble with mine than he's had with his. neither of us goes mud bogging or abusing them, so in hard use????, don't know if I could say the same.

.......what I can say, is that comfort wise, I wouldn't have the taco in my driveway. it's cramped, high, rough, and when I get in I hit my head on the top of the entry EVERY TIME. even after knowing its low, I crank my neck to get my head down and hit it anyway.

bottom line for me is that, no matter what it is in terms of reliability/resale value, I would not own one....if I have to drive it everyday I want to be comfortable, not hating my ride every time I get in.

I would absolutely not pull a 5000lbs trailer with my Tacoma. I have a trailer, fully loaded at ~2500lbs with another few hundred lbs in the bed; pulling that through the mountains is just right. Wouldn't want to push it past 3000, imo.

Sorry if I didn't play by the rules, I didn't know it was a contest of who has the biggest b...s.

I thought the o.p. wanted honest advice before spending a lot of hard earned money.

I have a 2010 Tacoma and I'd say it's been a good truck but not a great truck.

Engine and drive train have been solid but it hasn't lived up to the Toyota reputation in other ways.

Now that I'm looking to put a rear facing car seat I'm regretting not looking harder at a full size but that was 7 years ago so I can't really complain.

Once our second child arrives it'll need to go no doubt about it.

Yeah, same happened to me. The cavernous back seat in the F150 is awesome for even the largest rear facing car seats.
