Default Judge Willie

You probably don't want to try mouthing off or disrespecting the justice system in his Calgary Courtroom.

I read that this morning. Was happy to hear too. Willie is a great guy. Loved watching him box. Took me back 30 years!

Hopefully he'll be just as tough as a judge as he was in the rink.

Never knew the name as a boxer but...

He's coming in from being a defence attorney, should be interesting. Sounds like a good pick for the bench.

From 2011, interesting case:

Quote:
This kind of thing, said defence lawyer Willie deWit, “is what happens in our system a lot of times.” When police decide they need to make an arrest, he said, they find a way to make an arrest. They ignore anything that might exculpate the accused, and seize on anything that feeds their assumptions of guilt.

Wow a judge that has defended clowns like this....

Among the high-profile cases deWit has been involved in was successfully defending murder suspect Garrett Smith, who was acquitted by a jury in the beating death of a Colombian national on a Calgary street.

I can't wait to see his sentencing options: 6 months or six rounds with him, no protective headgear (for the convict, that is)

I remember the line of people on Willy DeWitt drive waiting o get into the rex plex. It stretched down to 109 ave. I also remember the beating by Bert Cooper. It felt like my brother was being beat up in there. (though I had only met him a half dozen times) Congratulations. Probably the only boxer to get out with his brain intact.

I have a keen interest in this as he was called to the bench to replace my current judge, Justice Marsha Erb. My legal battles have been long and our file(that a few of you know too well) was seized by Justice Erb and she became our case manager...so I suppose Justice deWit will become our case manager now.

I just learned of Justice Erb's departure (retirement?) by reading the news in the Sun...so this came as a bit of a shock to me. I sincerely hope that deWit is a 'take no BS' kinda guy...if so, this may get VERY interesting for my ex.

I guess we will be seeing him late April or May.

Sounds like you're in quite a tangle. Willie was one of my neighbors quite a while ago. He is a very straight up guy that to me would always do the right thing.

To those that post up about who he particulary defended...he did it well and did his job well. I'm very happy to see he will be one of the judges in this Province.
