By a certain group of people based only on the colour of their skin being allowed to harvest wildlife at an unsustainable rate with total disregard for the welfare of our environment

I agree

What is more important
The welfare of the environment or unregulated harvesting of animals?

I’m not trying to attack your heritage or traditions just so you know
Uncontrolled harvesting is a terrible idea
If they gave each band/tribe/ settlement a defined number of tags I would be all for it.

Yup giving a specific group special rights over another group is the definition...

The Alberta ministers tags, three are raffled off and three are auctioned off. Lots of guys buy tickets. Some spend 200k at the auction all to play Alberta Metis Indian for a day.

Agreed, why can't the numbers of animals harvested by Metis be controlled so everyone is on a bit more level playing field and to weed out the "few bad apples" that will kill everything they can because of "a sticker"! Wolf predation and uncontrolled harvest by FN's has already caused large decreases in ungulates in many of the crown land WMU's, now this?

Who is going to monitor and police the registration below when there is no control on who is out hunting at any given time??

Registration - for the purposes of conservation and management of the following species, all persons, including Métis harvesters, must register the kill of each of these animals in person and submit certain parts. Refer to the annual Hunting Guide for information on registration.

I also agree with the above post, what's going to be left for my kids to hunt in the next few years with no controls in place?

I feel sorry for you, it must be tough waking up every day with this bitterness within you. The AB Government did they're research into this interim agreement way better than the Metis did. Even myself with genealogical research done by some of the countries leading researchers showing linage back many hundreds of years including a strong presence in central AB prior to 1900 will not be eligible. You don't need 20/20 to see this news release was just before calling an election to garner votes. I said it already the vast majority of Metis will see this as blowing smoke long after the election results are in. I will however continue buying my certificate and tags after all that's what helps sustain our hunting heritage and conservation.

I agree. That's what worries me the most. Will there be anything realistically left for them. Unlikely.
Other than debt, higher taxes and a completely divided Country.

August 2005 the ministers bighorn sheep tag was returned to fnaws due to concerns of uncontrolled Métis harvesting

Might have to make a phone call to see if the wsf is aware that some of the tags might be coming back

The gov't has decided that Metis have certain rights similar to indigenous people. I still do not understand why they would get special status.

I can see how FN would but there would be no Metis without the white man.

Can someone explain it to me.

its ridiculous if you ask me. My kids are 1/32 metis blood and are qualified to get their metis cards whenever the wife and i want to apply. That would give my wife and kids more hunting rights than i have.
Culturally there hasn't been an emphasis on hunting/trapping/fishing in my wifes family for nearly 80 years. My kids will be raised to follow game regulations, put in for draws and purchase licenses even if its not required. There needs to be a limit at some point.
Special treatment for various members of an "equal" society is poisonous. I dont want that for my kids.

Why would you not be eligible?

Are you a member of the MNA?
Can you show an ancestral connection to a harvesting area?
Do you have a current address in that harvesting area?

If you cannot meet these requirements then you do not qualify.

Simple

Wonder what the auction would go for if they auctioned off a life long Metis sticker? I'd be all for them raffling off just one. Then at least they would know the value of said sticker. Taxable benefit maybe?

The sky isn’t falling. Before this agreement I had a harvesting area that was 160 km radius of Lac st Anne. That’s 320 km wide and 320 km high. Take a look on a map to see just how big of an area that is. Other than making the area larger nothing has changed. Not all Métis qualify as harvesters, only if you meet the Powely test. You think that now I have a bigger area I’m going to kill everything in site? The original harvesting card and area back in 2010 came from the conservative government so not sure how one party could expect votes over another. The right comes from the constitution and the Supreme Court of Canada, not given by any provincial government. Also if FN are not happy with this what difference does that make, we’ve never really been accepted by them either. Oh and I do buy tags to hunt sheep in the willmore, and will continue because I go there with a few white friends and wouldn’t want it to be awkward.

They should allow the winning bidders descendants to have the same privileges for 5 generations.

I could see it easily going for 7 figures

Interesting(or disturbing?) how a so-called “progressive” country such as Canada which prides itself on human rights and equality FOR ALL with all of of our anti-racist rhetoric lip service, grants special rights and privelages to a minority demographic based solely on bloodline(race).
Now imagine for just a moment if the role was reversed, and only CDN citizens of British descent enjoyed special rights and “white privelage”!! 😬😳
OMFG 😱.... Canada would be the scum of the Earth, apartheid, the South Africa of the New World, buncha racist mofos
One nation, one people, one set of rules for all.....until that day comes there will ALWAYS be discontent and grievances.

With this kind of thing happening, I am almost for selling off all public land, so at least these people require permission to access it. That may be the only way we have to control the harvest.

Yes it is a question I want answered and I honestly have no idea what the answer is.

I have absolutely no idea why special harvest rights exist. I’m being serious.

Because somehow certain people rights to practice “traditions” trumps everyones right to be equal.
