It makes me sick every year, the Oil companies are going to be fines Millions of dollars for the 30 dead birds found , but our government will do nothing to fix the problems were hundred of thousands of dead ducks and shore birds lay around, place smells like a maggot infested death.Do they not share the same responsibility as a Oil company??After driving around it seems most of the problems are in the lower mud flats.Call your new NDP and discuss this with them. You will see many dead ducks in Pictures. Today hits plus 39 C can only imagine the death that will happen today. This is PAKOWKI LAKE!!!

Been happening for years.

The natives call it 'bad water' I believe.

The water level is super shallow resulting in a botulism outbreak which kills some birds.

Kindof a nature caused thing.

Been happening since before Animal rights were invented.

Pakowki Lake is an endorheic lake in Alberta, Canada located south of Etzikom, Alberta and not far north is the former town site of Pakowki which may have received its name from the lake.

It is located in the prairies of southern Alberta, at an elevation of 860 metres (2,820 ft), in the County of Forty Mile No. 8. It is fed by a number of coulees and creeks, such as Etzikom Coulee, Irrigation Creek, Erickson Coulee, Ketchum Creek, Canal Creek, Bond Coulee and Bryant Coulee, and has no outflow. Reaching a maximum extent of 123 square kilometres (47 sq mi), it is one of the largest lakes in the province.

The name means "bad water" in Blackfoot language,[1] named so for the bad smell caused by the lack of an outflow. While it is the largest water body in southern Alberta, its waters are intermittent, and it can be classified as a slough. In times of flooding, the lake overflows through a channel into the Milk River, which flows 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) south of the lake.

In high water years, the lake kills hundreds of thousands[5] of birds due to avian botulism. Government studies conclude that nothing can be done to prevent the botulism.[6][7]

Thanks, so oil companies are required to take steps like air cannons etc to try to keep birds from tailing ponds, why is the govt not taking the same steps

I'm guessing Kannon is because it's a 'made by mother nature' phenomenon and it's been going on for a long time.

Am I the only one who is failing to grasp the comparison being made in this thread?

One is natural, one is man made....

Which one should be fixed and should be the focus of attention? I think it's pretty obvious.

Not saying dying birds is a good thing, but why is this being compared to the oilsands???

I'm sure it will make a huge difference to the dead ducks, knowing Mother Nature hates their guts and livers and wants them dead, while Syncrude loves them and is spending tons of money and effort to protect them.
