Default 8" swede-bore hand auger blades right?

Hello everyone

Just bought a used swede-bore auger and have a question of the blades. It was sold as a 7" but it has 8" blades on it. What I need to know is are the blades on the 8" swede-bore the same as the eskimo ones that they overhang the ends of the blade supports? I put in some pics of the one I got. If you have a swede-bore 8" are your blades this way too?

Thanks all.

TF

I just snapped this pic a few minutes ago of my 8" Swede Bore:

Yours looks the same as mine I think.

Had a guy this week tell me he cuts down 8 inch blades to fit a 7 inch auger and he said that works so worst case if the blades are good you could try that.

Google shows eskimo blades extend a bit passed too but not quite that much, since it looks the same as Scott N's probably be fine.

If your used hand auger is as good as mine was then it won't even cut a single hole until you get new blades lol... With the price of blades I don't recommend buying a used hand auger unless you get a chance to try it out first.

If the auger blades seem to be dull shim them first, and try that or get them sharpened...way cheaper than buying new

The blades had shims under them and not a good kind. They were really thick 1/16" it looked like. I tried the auger with the old blades and it cut but not good. Bought a new set at Peavy mart on sale that are eskimo brand and that fixed it. I don't like the way the blades catch the ice when you pull it back out of the hole. Feels like I will break the holder off the end.

Did the fellow tell you how he was cutting the blades down to 7"?

No I didn't ask, try to keep the heat down especially at cutting edge if you try it.

I would sooner sell it and go buy a new auger though(make up an excuse that you bought a power auger lol). Or better yet buy a power auger .

Your blades aren't full gauge so that they don't get balled up. Ice rings are a mess to clean.

Oh if you do try and cut them leave some overhang otherwise the flutes will bind in the hole while drilling. Your auger is probably how it is supposed to be, just my guess.
