Default New Scope - Which One????

Decided to treat myself to a new scope which will be mounted on my deer/elk rifle, a Browning Micro A bolt - 7mm08. My budget is around $750 - what would you chose and why?

That money I'd go for a VX3 or Viper.

I just picked up a Nikon Monarch 3 today for my son, thinking about picking one up for myself too. Bang for your buck I don't think you could go wrong. You could get a leupold VX-3 for $750, but it's not $300 better than the Monarch.

I've had both and I'd either buy the Nikon for $460 or spend $1000 and pick up a Zeiss.

If you can come up with a Conquest 3-9x40, it fits your budget, and it is a great buy. There may still be some around to be had. It got replaced this year, can't speak to the new version though.

Another vote for Zeiss Conquest. They usually have promotions at this time of year with either a rebate or, last year, a free puma knife (or something similar).

VX3 would be my choice in that price range. Some of the others have equal or even better glass but I have more trust in the VX3 or even VX2 to perform in tough conditions.

Conquests are heavy and bulky looking to my eye. I would go with an Elite if I wanted to save some money. I have run several right back to the B&L days and have never had an issue.

Thx Guys,

What about magnification and scope size for a 7mm08? I was thinking 40mm and up to 9 magnification, but that's because just about every gun I have owned has the same.

Honestly I would get the Nikon Monarch in a 2.5-10x42 and consider it money well spent. Personally for big game hunting I'm not crazy about a 50mm objective, nor do I really like the 40mm. 44 or 42 is where it's at, that's what turns me off of leupold because you have to step up to the VX6 to get a 42mm, and for $1500 I'd rather a Swaro or Leica. Wholesale sports is having 15% off all optics November 14-24, you could get that scope for about $400.

I agree with you Kurt on the 50mm - had VX3 in 50mm but I did not like it. I will check out the Monarch and also call P&D tomorrow on the Conquest (420 would be a great price).

for about $500 you can get a 3-9 power leupold with custom dial system (cds) . so far it worx slick .

got one on my fathers 300 H&H , sighted for 100 yards, pushing a 180 gr game king at 2800 fps. goes up to 600 yards on the dial......after that holdover

tested it out ..........put my 10 " gong at 350 yards, walked back ,dialed up to the 3.5 notch,fire......ting, " betcha cant do that again", throw bolt.....fire ....ting. "let me try " he was so excited

and now i just put one on my kimber 308(as of an hour ago).......same scope more or less mine is just the 33mm obj ultralite.....so ill do load development till im happy then send in the free cds coupon that came with the scope with all the ballistic information and im all set. im gonna try a 110 gr zippy bullet zeroed at 200 so hopefully my dial is set up to 800 yards (coyotes).cant wait to start shooting this rifle/scope......weighs a little under 6 pounds

Another vote for the Ziess conquest 3x9. Its an amazing scope, but it comes with a catch. Youll love the ziess, and the next one in line is 4 digits.

I am a Leupold supporter; along with some of the other guys.

I like the VX2 3 x 9 40mm or VX3 3.5 x 10 40mm.

There are some nice Leupy scopes for sale here on AOF in the $350 - $550 range....

Leaves you $200 to figure out the ammo your rifle likes.

IMHO

Same boat as others, Luepold VX-3 or a Nikon Monarch or even a Prostaff if you'd like to save a few more bucks. I'd recommend leupold rings and bases. Great caliber and nice rifle, you'll enjoy it lots!

One of the best deals out there right now is the MONARCH 5 riflescope. I have seen some great prices and it is a fantastic riflescope. I have used the 3-15 on my .300 Win for 3 seasons now and love it. Dial in the BDC reticle with Spot On and you will be amazed at the long-range accuracy you get. I have taken KS doe out to 599 yards using my set up. Definitely worth taking a look at.
