I was out there last summer with father and brother for a salmon trip. Sadly I didn't pack the fly rod with me and I was kicking myself for most of the drive from Comox up. From what I did see along the drive; some locations you may want to check out (please keep in mind, I didn't fish any of these waters but would have killed to have a fly rod with me to check some of them out):
- just West of the town of Campbell River, along highway 28. When we drove by we could see people standing almost shoulder to shoulder along this section of the river, all with fly rods in their hands. I would imagine that there's likely a lot of information available about this stretch of river based on the number of peeps that we saw out there.
- Past Gold River, along the gravel road that takes you out to Tahsis you will drive over a number of beautiful looking creeks and streams that all looked like they would be some great holding water. Chatting with my brother during the drive we both agreed that we could probably easily spend a week or more along this long (~70 km) stretch of gravel road exploring without getting bored. Like I said though, we didn't have fly rods with us so there's a possibility that all of the amazing looking water didn't hold a single fish.
Sorry I couldn't provide any more information, but I'm quite curious about what you find out there since there's been a couple of chats with my brother over drinks about the possibility of heading back out that way with fly rods and ignoring the incredible ocean fishing next time.

Gold, Thasis, Muchulat are all blue ribbon steelhead rivers. A 6 weight won't cut it, but whatever.
Call Barry's Bait and Tackle in Delta BC, or Island Outfitters in Victoria, and they will fill you in on what you need to know.
I am REALLY JEALOUS of you. By the way, ditch the flyrod, book a charter and go for Halibut to Bajo or Esparanza out of Thasis. Nootka Sound is a slice of heavan on earth.

If you are going open water fishing take at least an eight weight. In this area on the open ocean I have caught cohos, pinks and sockeyes trolling flies and casting while others were bottom fishing. Relased one coho and a shark that was lurking under the boat promptly ate him!!! Pretty exciting. Fly shops in Campbell River have a good selection of flies that will work on open water. Most of my success was on needle fish imitations, sink tip line and about a 10-15 foot, 10 lb leader. Cheers

going again this summer for the 4th year in a row ! early july , love the place , the drive is interesting , but the fishing is amazing! Will be trying my luck at flyfishing for salmon in the open water this year . 360 cortland , 8wt TFO , clousers and some home made flies , will see how it goes ,and definetely post some pics !
There is also a couple small trout lakes close to town of Tahsis , don't be afraid to spend some time there as well !
