Default Wizard lake success

I had a great day at Wizard lake today. It was my 1st time there. I caught two on my rod and two got away. My tip-up went up about 8 times but I missed them all. It there a better way to set up the tipup? I just had a jig on the end with a small smelt.

Beautiful day out though. Ice was good.

I just went to the right of the dock, not too far out. This was was under 63 cm, or I would have kept it. I think it was about 58cm

Whatever that is in inches.

Nice thick fish I am glad you got into them....my guess is if you had a cam you would have iced more, when you knew when to set the hook.....lately out there they have been mouthing it and spitting the bait....

I was there with another member and we watch a pike grab his tip-up herring and literally swim in circles for over a minute without setting off the tip up....was neat to watch.

Go to the fishin hole south side. They sell "Quick Strike" rigs for tip ups. Basically 2 trebles with about 6" leader to common split ring. Attach line to that and you have 2 trebles instead of one hook. 5 for points to try and stick one in the mouth.

Good luck

But I have been using small smelts because the fish are small there. Not big enough for 2 trebles.

Your bait are too small or you think the fish in the lake are too small?

I use quick strikes all the time with success.

I have caught 8 lbs burbot and seen 10-12 lbs and over pike in that lake.

Cool! I will have to try bigger bait. I just heard from someone that out of 20 fish you catch only 1 will be a keeper.

Depends where you fish and whats biting....one day I caught only 6 fish with 2 keepers....one day I caught 25 fish with no keepers....they are in there.

Try going to pigeon and catch a keeper.....

First off, nice work!

Now, down to business!

When it comes to pike, you'd be surprised how big of a bait they will take relative to their size...and at this time of year they're really looking to pork up for the spawn, and a big easy meal is exactly what they want.

Generally speaking, smaller bait will get you more fish in terms of numbers, but a larger bait will typically get larger fish, but not as many of them. At the same time, a couple of my biggest fish have been on what I would consider to be smaller baits.

The beauty of ice fishing, is that you get to run two lines! If I'm running a rod and a tip-up like you are, then I would use a smaller bait on a single treble on the rod (the one likely to get the most action) and then a larger bait on a quick strike rig under the tip-up. This way you get the best of both worlds

Let us know how you make out on Thursday!

Thanks for the offer. I'm really busy tomorrow though, and one of my stops is at West Ed Mall. So I will pick one up there at TFH. I used to have one as well, Will search my tackle box.

yep bigger bait bigger fish as a rule
Pike will eat 1/3 their body weight in one meal 30 # = 10 #fish will eat

Pike fish herring/ big smelt
in Euorpe they use 3 # to 5# suckers for bait= big Pike

Was at Wizard yesterday, west end, caught a bunch, mostly around that 55-60cm size ones. If you want to go small just use a jig with a minnow, they love that to, the problem with just one jig head in a smelt is there's a lot of surface they can grab with no hooks.

we used to fish there all the time... always had a rod jigging with small minnow and a tip-up with a 5 inch smelt on it with two small trebles... you would lose a few because the fish are pretty small in that lake but for the most part it wasnt an issue with 2 trebles
