Default Calling Lake Trip

Myself,sns2 and another friend headed to Calling Lake for the day, and we did well on walleye to 58cm, but a friend reeled in a 41-1/2" pike. As sns2 got it in the net, the hooked straightened out and came out.

Nice, we're camped out here this weekend. Had a good day at Volkswagen, fish fry, beer and crib after.

Was that you that was drift fishing because of a mishap? We were the two in the black and cream colored bottom crestliner. The one you were near when you started "drift" fishing due to a mishap. If it was you, sorry for all the noise. We were pretty rowdy but having a great time. And on no substances either...just high on life and great fishing

I was jigging with a flyrod and sinking line. Landed a 27.5 incher, 27, 26 at least 2, 25, 24.... etc. Most were in the slot. Neither of us kept.

We slammed easily 250+ walleye. 7 tubs of minnows gone. Last year we did 300+ 8 tubs of minnows and plastics. I'll be lobbying to get the limit up to two in the slot. There are two many walleye and skinny. They should raise the limit up for a few years and then drop it back down. Just my honest opinion.

She was doing damn good. You guys were right on top of our GPS waypoint. LOL. Glad we were beat to that spot by good folks. It’s a public lake and no one owns spots.

It looked like you were battling giants all day long, but you definitely could tell when you had a real lunker on the line...

Oh and sorry to all those around us for all the noise and rowdiness...lol

P.S.- Everyone get up to Calling and give a starving walleye a good home please...lol

Yes the drift fishing was the result of me not securing the anchor line properly, I looked back just in time to see the rope disappear.lol

We were drifting way too fast near you, so we went back to where the wind wasn't as bad, and we did much better, picking up fish on every drift, including the pike. You guys caught more than anyone else by far, but we still did okay, especially considering the circumstances. A boat beside us landed a 74cm walleye shortly after we caught the pike, so there are definitely some good fish around.

We didn't lose any fish out of the net either trip, we landed the big pike, when the hook straightened and the big walleye, when the hook broke yesterday. We seem to be doing well with netting fish, which is a good thing considering that we tend to buy cheap hooks.
The only mishap yesterday was a blown fuse on my fishfinder, which for some reason had a 1 amp fuse, instead of the 3 amp fuse that it should have had. The fishfinder has actually been a real pain, but at least the issues appear to have been resolved.

All that I use is a painted jig head, and half of a minnow. By the end of the day yesterday, I had caught around 30 walleye on the same hook, and half of the paint was missing. The boys were teasing me to throw it away, and use a new one after it started losing paint, but I kept using it, and the fish kept biting.

Based upon Elk’s irrational aversion to changing something that really needed to be changed yesterday while on the water, and one is led to believe that it is a statistical certainty that he changes his underwear no more than 3x per year. Just puttin that out there.

BTW, he had many of the same jig heads in his tackle box. Again, just puttin that out there.

I don't like to change what is obviously working, that jig caught more fish yesterday, than anyone else did, and it wasn't new yesterday. Lol
