Default Snow geese

Just wondering if any one has heard if them have start to move through SK yet?

Do not know about SK but a flock of them went over Calgary Tuesday morning. They were headed north and it was great to watch them disappear into the fog.

Not even close to SK. Scouters making their way past the snowline and moving into southern ND then they go back. All the birds got pushed together in central SD the last few days. Suppossed to be awesome amounts of waterfowl in one area. Should be a week or two wait.

Check out the migration thread on snow goose forum on

Those snows you guys are seeing in AB must be Pacific flyway birds.....

Good luck with that. You do know he's talking about snow geese and not Canada's right? I doubt the Pacific Flyway birds would ever be this far east, they stick very close to the coast from what I have heard, and if they haven't been through Southern Sask I would be very suprised if they were in Calgary. Maybe swans or Canadas, my two cents anyways.

Default Swans in Calgary

I saw my first flock on Tuesday March 29, they will be here in large numbers very soon. The prairie is just teeming with life, lots of ducks too but no snows yet.

Google "Canadas Snow Depth Map" it will tell you how deep the snow is.

lots of snow from Regina and east. Canadas have just started to arrive but there isnt really much for open fields or water. Shouldnt be long if it decides to warm up. Havent seen any snows let alone any ducks or other birds other then seagulls

Pacific flyway snows definitely come through Alberta. Not a tonne of them but some for sure.
The bulk of the snows you guys see in the fall are the mid-continent population who's numbers are through the roof. In the fall, they will slide back into SK once they are in central to south AB. Then they make their way down central US.
The Pacific flyway snows will move north to south through AB then onto Montana and make their way south, south east to CA.

Todays reports of flocks of snows touching down in southern ND.

...definitely snows in SK. I was out all this past week in SW Mb and nothing was stopping those birds. West was the destination. Sk is holding a pile of birds somewhere central, real close to the snowline.
The breeders are behind on their schedule and they were not stopping for my spread, well, 3 snows did.
They are migrating against the wind, the wind at their back, cross wind. They are behind and in a hurry. Was almost like hunting November last week, -15 and snow.

Lessers and specks were decoying great!!

Trickle migration this year, birds will be coming up steadily and not in too big of masses.
Should be a week or so and some juvies will appear. I will be back out this week a few times.

Came home from the cabin two days ago and there are a few small flocks of snow geese north of Saskatoon but not great numbers yet. Lots and lots of large Canada pairs though. They nest all through the area and pairs are setting up.
