Default New to AB fishing - Red Deer River tips?

Hi there! I’m new to fishing in AB and it’s a very different game than it was back home in MB.
I live in Olds and I’ve gone out to RDR on the N side of the Dickson dam twice and I’ve been skunked. Tried for walleye and trout both nights. Using panther Martin brown trout, swimbait (red body, white tails, some orange head and yellow tails. Both worn and paddletail), spinners (silver, orange and gold) and LT 5 of diamonds.

Any tips, tricks or locations you’d all recommend? I will not rest until I catch my first AB fish!

where are you from? I felt like I wrote that post......I'm from Manitoba and also live in Olds and occasionally fish the RDR. It's a different beast, for sure, but you'll figure out where the holes are. Nothing beats time on the water....put in the time, you'll figure it out.

Haha originally from Argyle (near Stonewall, MB) and lived in the peg for a while before I moved out here permanently. Was living half in each province for 6 years, finally able to live in one place so I picked AB

With all due respect, I'm a big believer in not handing out info. I think the best way for anyone to learn is to go figure it out on your own. Spend time on the water and figure it out. It's how I've always learned and don't like the idea of getting info from others. It's why the idea of a guided fishing trip has little appeal to me...I have ZERO interest in someone doing everything for me. I'd rather figure it out on my own...

Default Here's The Best Way To Fish The Red Deer River

-- I have fished the Red Deer River all the time, here's the secret:

-- buy some waders from Canadian Tire when they are on sale

-- also have a head set, referring to light

-- husky jerks in the "12" and "14", "fire tiger" is the best, but they all work

-- technique cast, reel, twitch, repeat, slooooow is the key

-- go down to the buoys, it's where the boat launch and the beaver dam are

-- fish upstream from the buoys to the corner

-- best time is from 5:00 PM to past dark

-- one Halloween we were catching walleye and browns to midnight

-- I have been checked by game wardens lots, they will coast down the hill, lights off and engine off

-- so have your license and no booze and of course NO RETAINED FISHED

-- in the fall, when the geese are flying off the river to feed, that's the time to fish (start)

-- sept and oct is when all the big walleyes and browns are there, when the browns smash the husky jerk you will know it

-- please go have fun and post your results ... thanks ...

If you like a little different adventure head for Sundre. Go about 5-6 km past town and take a left on Coal camp road. It runs beside the river up to Mountain air lodge. Lots of spots to wet a line. Decent trout fishing.
Cheers
