Default Where can I practice with my bow?

Do to live near any ranges but can I practice in the park or woods? I will make sure it is very safe first I and have a good target, I just want to make sure it is not against the law. Not hunting just target practice.

If you have a backyard, you can use a recurve. But not a compound if you live in city limits *and im assuming you do based on a previous post you posted in hunting forum* you cant discharge any projectiles or firearms in city parks (unless there was an approved range) which there are no archery ranges in Edmonton. There is an Archery Range in Sprucegrove (Trophybook Archery off century road) and one in Sherwood Park. Also an Outdoor Range just outside Villeneuve(that requires annualmembership with ABA). Im not aware of any others around that area.

It doesn't matter if you have a recurve or a compound...an arrow is a projectile.

Capital Region Archers is in Edmonton and so is Wyld Archery if you are looking for indoor ranges in Edmonton.

Ya your right. Looked into the bylaws. I always figured it had something to do with FPS (traditional being less than compounds). I know of guys in cities shooting their recurves who have said it was legal. Dosent affect me,but good to know before giving other people advice.
Either way with the 3 places I mentioned and the 2 others mentioned, plenty of places to shoot. And its a good place to meet other people with more experience to aid you if your new.

I personally like the Villeneuve outdoor range. Its close for me and your not waiting to take a shot at a paper target with 10 other people. Also not easy to cant a longbow with people standing right where you need to cant. Also they have 3D targets in a natural setting, which for me is more beneficial to Hunting Practice.

You can get memberships at Trophybook too. 160$ a year single 200$ a year family. Like LC said Calender year. You get a gate code(which changes every year). And you can go anytime 24/7.

Not within city limits but on crown land or private areas out side the city (with permission from the land owner) you are good to go.

That seems a bit stupid. What about in the basement if that is not a silly question. Could be doing some close range stuff in the basement as at least 15 yards. Maybe good for a traditional style of bow?

I shoot in my basement, much safer than the backyard. As the law is written likely it is not legal but who is going to have an issue with what you do in your basement?

I shoot in my basement too. If you're in the city DON'T shoot in your yard.

...Technically your basement is still within City limits...but if done safely who's to know...

I had a goofy friend that had a black powder revolver and use to shoot in his basement...he had a big old lumber bridge plank ..bout six inchs thick by 20" wide he would shoot into...

He was showing off the revolver to his 70 yr old dad and showed him how it shot...the black powder hit a solid knot in the timber aqnd ricochetted back hitting his dad square in the chest and dropped him like a bad habit...

The round ball didnt have enough energy to break skin but bruised him badly and required a trip to the hospital....

Imagine the paper work, explaining and red tape on that one...[gun shot and all]

Yup, illegal to shoot in your backyard or basement.
In fact by the letter of the law it is illegal to shoot a b.b. gun in your basement!!
But I gotta admit...if I (more specifically my 9 and 12 year old) were in our backyard across the alley from you and you were shooting a bow, I'd be on the phone to the police in a heartbeat.
I know you think you're safe and a good shooter and all that...
But that's what everyone says who kills or injures someone accidentally with a weapon of some kind.

This is not entirely correct. Club members must have insurance coverage which means they need Archery Canada memberships or ABA memberships.

According to the city's (Edmonton) Public Places Bylaw (14614)
Part II Section 9

WEAPONS
9

(1) A person shall not possess any loaded weapon, capable of
launching or firing a projectile, in a public place.

(2) A person shall not cause or permit a weapon to launch or fire a projectile in a public place.

Fine will be no less than $500 and no more than $10000.

Since the term weapon is not defined in the bylaw you would have to look to the Oxford dictionary where it is defined as:

A thing designed or used for inflicting bodily harm or physical damage

I would say that includes recurves...

I guess I should add prior to debate:

Part 1 Section 2

Definitions

(j) “public place” means any property, whether publicly or privately owned, to which members of the public have access as of right or by express or implied invitation, whether on payment of any fee or not; and

come to the hunter shoot in Grande Prairie Aug 9-10. lots of practice and 3 full loops of all kinds of foam critters to rip arrows at. sorry for the advertising, but is a really good option to hone your skills and make sure the bow hits what you aim at.
