What material are you using. I have found the 20 lb braid you use for tipups works well. Leave the tag ends about 12 inches long, tie the knot, and then slide it three or four times, tightning it ever time after you slide it.

What do you do with the 12" tails?

I just leave them that long so I can pull the knot tighter, then cut them off

I'm not sure how to tie them by hand but this woman shows how to make them with two straws:

Almost by hand?

We use the DuBro slip knot tool:

We use fly line backing. It works very well and can be gotten in bright colors.

I have been using slip bobbers that I bought at Walmart- They do not use the line and tube but use a small thin plastic rectangle with 4 small holes drilled in the plastic. You just thread your line weaving it thru the 4 holes then thread your bead and bobber and then your terminal tackle. The plastic piece works pretty well without slipping.
