Default Is a .338 too big for bears?

Well headin out tommorow for anual bear trip. Not sure if a .338 Win mag is suitable for bears though, might have to use my 45.70...if it's not too big.

Just kiddin guys.....I've shot more bears with my 338 than Carter has pills. Sometimes the posts here get just a bit wacky.

225 Hornady's with a stiff "book" load. Not a so-called "premium" bullet, but they sure do work good. (before anyone says it, yes shot placement is the most important oooops we all know that, dont we? Old Sako Hunter..almost time to get it re-blued, startin to show some carry-wear. Gonna take the 45.70 as well this trip and see if I can't find a big furry critter to whack with it.

Well enough pot-stirring...forward, hither, yonder and away...........

Well good luck on the hunt. I think both your choices are a tad small.

" is this gun too small?"
This coming from a guy who has been known to drag around a Citation with pointy sticks??!!
That's sorta like asking " does this hat make me look cool?"

.378 WBY is the best bear calibre... .338 is needs to be a brain shot to kill them.

Also, we all know that old Sako Hunters are like the Rem 770 of Euro rifles...poor accuracy, unreliable no-good rifles. I'll take it off your hands for $200....

338 is way too small..,you need the latest fur seeking hand held guided missile launcher if you want any chance of getting close to a black bear .i dont think you can get any barnes tsx's for those but i "heard" they come with accubonds.

You live in Alberta where extreme excess is the norm.

Take your jacked up 1 ton diesel grocery getter down to ATRS and get the first 50 cal you can get your hands on, nothing less will do.

Then haul out your bear with your jacked up can am quad on 28 inch mudzillas, a regular quad will not do.

Then go and rip up a manmade " lake" in your 350 horse ski boat to celebrate.

Man you do have a good memory. That Citation was a great bow. 78 lbs, 30% let-off...a little different than todays mechanical marvals. If you remember I had deerskin suede inserts and wrapped the grip in deerskin, dipped and crested arrows with two part black/blue fletching. A little flashy, but deffinatly "stylin". Back when I was shooting everyday, I was ticked if I shot below 175......no sights. Still got my trophies, medals and stuff. Sometimes I look at them and remember all the fun we used to have at the shoots....even though quite often the second day had to be shot with a bit of a hangover.

I remember ppl used to accuse me of gap-shooting. Well as you know, instintive shooting is totally different than gap shooting. I can still pick up a bow and within 3 shots be hittting the 9/10 ring. Kinda ticks ppl off. When I took up sporting clays, my archery background helped me a lot.

At a shoot last weekend a cpl of guys were talking about putting new beads on their shotguns. I told them that was their problem....they were looking at the bead. If you're looking at the target pull the trigger. If you have a good mount and know where, when and how to pull the propper lead (see enough different presentations), you will hit the bird. A buddy of mine says the only time I miss is when I think about the shot....so don't think, Abe

Anyway thanks for the flashback. Five hrs and 5 minutes till I roll for the Simonette.

Yip I never used a scond bullet on a bear carrying the 338. I was guiding a Norwegian guy(wonderful ppl to hunt with) a number of years ago and had to go into the bush after a wounded bear. It was so thick my cowboy hat got pushed off goin in. The first time I saw the bear, he was eight ft in front of me snappin his jaws. I swung the 338 up to my hip and pulled the trigger. Sometimes it's nice to have a boomer in your hands. Anything woulda worked, I suppose, but....

I was wondering about that??!!
Who cares if a guy is using a post gap, pre gap, or pure instinctive style , anyway? Hit what you are aiming at, and if you are looking at the sights, beads, crosshairs, arrow, or whatever, you ain't looking at what you are aiming at!!
(Of course, there are days I seem to be looking a the air, because that is what I hit!!)
