Default Fishing Perch

Hey all....

I normally fish trout but want to give perch a shot this ice fishing season. Any tips on bait i should use, and lakes in southern Alberta. Thanks for any help you can give.

I use a jigging Rap or sm. spoon for seaching and then once found I use a small jig tiped w/ maggots or shrimp from cocktail rings. Once you catch one perch eye's work well also.

X2 on the perch eyes. They work wonders once you got 'em.

Sherburn's the best. Not sure if thats a close enough drive for you (would be about an hour from butte). They can be picky but i always saw lots on the camera (underwater).

I like using swetish pimple , or the Hammered perch I think they called it spoon made by len thompson.Rubber grubs are deadly for the jumbo perch , tipped with 2 or 3 maggots . I also like the marmish micro hooks , used with the marmish ice rod , has a built in spring bobber detects the slightest of slightest move of the hook .

After spending several hours at WEM Fishing Hole on the week end, I got most set ups like BBJ's. Bait was hard to find. No places had any maggots or mealworms (my all time favorite for perches) so ended up with powerbait maggots. Went to Morinville pond with my daughter on Sunday and drilled some holes at the northwest corner. Ice was about 7" thick. Fishing was slow. Several little ones to keep the little ones entertained. Wonder if it is the bait. Anyone experiences this before? Met couple guys who just fished at the Morinville reservoir and they said it was quite slow there too. But the equipment, especially the Marmish rod, really worked. Could almost felt when the fishing was just nipping. The Russian hooks were good attracting the fishes but not good at catching them for some reason.

Tried there last year and ya nit far to travel.

Thanks for the tips....looking forward to some ice, and maybe some perch this year. I have tried the powerbait maggots and they work well for trout too.

Most Mowhawk gas stations have worms, maggots and small minnows.

I've posted this before, Burntstick and Cow are great for perch. I use a small jigging spoon with gold and orange colors with maggots. If you are getting lots of bites, use a small len thompson five of diamond with maggots. You'll catch big ones this way.

Get some beef bone for like soup or something. It works better than maggots, and is less likely to come off your hook.

A guy on another web site suggested that you take a small marshmallow dip it in honey and roll it in goldfish food.

legaly i dont believe you are supposed to use fish eyes as bait in Alberta.
you might want to heavily research this...

but, i use the same flies i use fly fishing, cronomids, nymphs, etc with a split shot or 2to get it down the hole... very effective!

From the Alberta Regs

Quote:
Parts of Game Fish. Only the skin, fins, eyes and dead eggs of game fish may be used as bait, provided these fish were lawfully caught by angling. Skin, fins, eyes and dead eggs of game fish may be used where the use of bait fish is prohibited, but cannot be used where bait bans are in effect. All game fish kept must be counted in the daily catch limit, including any fish from which parts are used for bait.

what is it about perch eyes that work so well? My Grandfather used to use them and even had plastic fish eyes he would put on hooks.

Me....have never tried them.
