Pike in the evening.
Hey friends. Just wondering if anyone ever has much luck fishing for pike in the evenings? I'm talking dinner to dusk. Most of my pike have come before about 3pm.

Depends on the day; water temperature and barometric pressure play a big role in activating Northerns. However I have fished days without any luck until dusk, then it was non-stop action.

my fishing bud and I are targeting them seriously from 4:00pm thru a half hour after sunset. if it's sunny and a good wind is clipping, face the waves and slow drag your bait with the roll.

I find it is good until just before sunset. Once it starts getting dark the bite usually shuts off.

Most lakes I have found fairly good pike fishing in the last couple of hours of light. But I have also found a few lakes that never have an early or late bite. Only ever catch fish there from 10-2 or perhaps 3.

We've always had our best luck from sunrise til maybe 10:30 and then the last 2 hrs of the day. Pick up a few though the rest of the day but never consistently. Biggest fish for us have almost all been in the first hour or last hour before the sun hits the horizon.

Good stuff guys. I did some looking on google and there seems to be very little consistency between "experts". So I guess all we can conclude is that it depends. Just like any other fishing question. Lol.

They definitely bite up till dark. I catch lots pickerel fishing at that time, but usually move out a little deeper if I catch to many.

I have found the night bite to be almost non existent. I am sure you can still get the odd one but you can literally sit in the same spot you were catching regularly all day and not catch a thing once it gets dark, seen this too many times for it to be coincidence and it makes sense because Pike are considered to be primarily a visual feeder.

My experience has been that both Walleye and pike bite harder at dusk and into the night then they do in the daytime.
Hot sunny mornings and early afternoon do get the pike excited also.

Pike are primarily visual feeders as RavYak stated. I have not really open water fished for them invtje dark, but I have had pretty good success on the ice night fishing for pike with lures that glow in the dark. It is a bit of pain using them though as you have to recharge them every 5-10 minutes.
