Default New to Bow Hunting

Hello all! I am hoping to get some informative advice from all the archery fanatics out there as a new guy to the bow hunting world. I have been rifle hunting for 10 years now and would like to delve into the art of archery. I have zero experience with any kind of bow and would like to know what would be the best way to start such as beginner bow choice.

Thanks

Welcome to bow hunting Fletch. A good first step to get into bow hunting is to visit a pro shop. At most pro shops you will be able to rent a bow and get lessons. When you are ready to purchase one you will be able to shoot it to make sure it has a good feel for you and they will set it up properly for you.

If you are in the Calgary area I would recommend Jimbows (Calgary archery centre is also good but not my preference).

Thanks I am actually out in the middle of nowhere near Wainwright. So a Lloydminster or Edmonton trip would be my closest bet. Anyone know of a good shop in those areas where the keepers aren't pompous elitists? Hit a couple in some smaller towns and couldn't get any helpful info just a lot of snide remarks.

Hi. I'm new to archery as well. I went and saw Martin @ Swamp Donkey. He took lots of time to help me set up, even though I bought a bow elsewhere & he answered tons of my newbie questions. I ended up buying arrows, a release and some other things off of him and will definitely go back.

your best bet would be to go to a local shop that carries compounds, recurves, longbows, and if possible a horsebow. try as many of each style you can. when i first started out it was with a compound. settled on a bowtech then went through months of trial and error untill i found the the sight and rest i liked. then arrows and broadheads to match my setup. now, i make all my own archery gear, ALL of it. settled now on a medieval longbow and heavy fir arrows, homemade trade points and goose feathers. primitive, but cheaper than anything else.

each person is different, so saying, get this or that for your begining bow is impossible. best info i can give, whatever setup you choose, be it a primitive simple longbow or the most elite fastest shooting nock'em down compound, practice, practice, practice some more, and after your arms are jelly practice more. if you plan to hunt this year then practice at many different ranges untill you cant possibly miss. and no your limits.

good luck, timber.

Thanks for the feedback all. Yeah I kind of assumed that I would need to be fitted for the right bow hoping I can find somewhere local to do some testing out. I'm sure I'll be asking more as time goes on. And yeah I won't be doing any bowhunting this year as its just not enough time for me to get ready for it too much going on.

Thanks
