Default What are your favourite perennials?

Just moved into a new place and am enjoying a little gardening for the first time in my life. My flower beds need a little rounding out. What are your favourite perennials?

My perennial bed is out front limited sun. Hosta, bleeding hearts (wife), ferns, false spireas, and fill in with begonias, impatience, and fuchsias for some color. I like it green with low maintenance

Morning Glories. Stunning brilliant yellow blooms and they are as dependable as the sun setting and this is close to 20 years later. They bloom constantly. Spring, summer and early fall.
Clematis
Bleeding hearts
Lillies ( so many colors to choose) yet you have to be on top of the red back beetle as they are very hard on them.

After I rid my yard of 2 big spruce trees and all the needles they dropped I could finally get things to grow. We have tiger lily’s next to the house, which grow about 3’-4’ tall. Also I have peonies that I grabbed from a infill project that was getting demoed. They are doing great! The guy on the machine even dug them out for me. Both these plants fill out well and look good, and stay green for the rest of the summer. Also I have some bearded iris that look really good in early June. All of these plant once established can be split and multiply to fill space.

Tulips and daffodils.

My daffodils grow and spread like crazy.

Lots of good suggestions here.
An important consideration is where, and what type to plant.

Try to always look at the height of your flowers and know to plant the taller ones in the back, with shorter ones in the front.
Also look at when they bloom. Different plants will bloom in different months and it's nice to always have something colorful.
Very easy to have plants in full bloom from late May to early September instead of just July.

My personal suggestion on specific plants though may not be to your wife's liking. I suggest cucumbers in the back, tomatoes in the middle, and carrots in the front.
Not perennials, I know.
You can't eat flowers.

I guess that's not actually true. My mom used to make some awesome stuff with zucchini flowers.
So if you've got the space.....

South facing/full sun: Dwarf Dayllies, Coneflowers, Delphiniums

North facing/shade: Mixed Hostas, multiple Ferns, Coral Bells, Ligularia, Brunnera, Astilbe. I have another that has "Dragon" in the name that is really pretty, large, spiky leaves, huge yellow blooms, but I can't find the proper name.

Iris are awesome, and you can divide the roots every couple years to make more. can even spray them with roundup and they just laugh it off. if you have a dead corner maybe a rhubarb plant to snack on if you arent sour enough

We have a variety of "cosmetic" plants out front (street side) like ground covers and ferns to irises and some other stuff.

In the back and around the side of the house we have things that might be a little less "showy" but are great to have, strawberries, Virginia creeper, rhubarb, tomatoes (not a perennial) but you get the point - stuff that serves a purpose - it's edible, or helps control insects or provides shade/cover or something else like that. There are a few pockets of flowers and stuff but most of it is something serving a purpose other than "looking pretty".
