Default Donating Meat / Butchers

Hi there,

Does anybody here know the procedure for donating wild meat to the food bank?

As well, does anyone know of any good, reliable butchers in Edmonton that take a field dressed/skinned deer and cut up and package it?

Thanks

Hey Barry

I don't agree with food bank - know too many people that abuse the **** out of the concept - selling it for VLT money, cigs and booze. And if you think I'm kidding or making it up, I would print their names but I don't like dealing with lawyers.

As for cutting up your game, I cut for family and freinds. I have a electric meat saw and decent grider. Working on the cooling unit and smoker still. Lots of books on sausage, jerky and smoking methods. I don't charge for it as I am an amatuer but am looking into taking a few courses. I have cut a beef up every year since I was a kid, and plenty of deer and moose. If you want expert cuts fancy cuts, not going to happen. But helping appreciative freinds this way ensures that always have plenty of meat in the freezer and the opportunity to experiment with different sausage recipes and soon smoking techniques.

Going to work on goose jerky this year - a freind of my has a recipe/process for it that once you taste this stuff, you will be spoiled forever as to what real jerky is suppose to taste like.

I'm in the Spruce Grove area, so if anyone else has wild game that they need a hand with PM me - I hope I have not openned too big a door.

Check out page 90 of the 2008 Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations booklet for the information you seek. Call 780 443-6006 for donation guidelines. "Alberta Hunters Who Care" is the organization.

Thanks Andy. Should have remembered they have a web site....already have his book. Very good on the tech and safety issues. Also lots of interesting ways of setting up a smoker cheaply.

Hey, Mike. Good for you for helping out others. Well done, sir, and good luck with the courses. I'm trying to teach myself, but eating 'tag soup' last year rather set the process back.

Take care,
Tree
