Default 30-06 and 204 best common powder

So I am thinking to migrate from h4350 which I use in 30-06 towards a powder to use in both 204 ruger and 06. H4895 and Varget seem to be good choices but some opinions would be great on this.Tx

I've only ever used rl-22 on the 06' and varget and benchmark on the 204. In my 204 the varget works best . My rifle is also fussy in 204-doesn't like boat tails or 40 gr bullets. All 3 powders in both rifles are half m o a if I do my part

No ofence here but for what reason would you want to use the same powder. You might luck out and get a decent load for both with the same powder but really you would see better results using optimum powders for each.

Hodgdon superformance might an option for both though.

On a flip note if your not going to use your H4350 can I buy it?

Thanks,
Mike

I agree with Mike....those two cartridges are so different in design and capacity that you would be hard pressed to find a single powder to offer an optimum load in them both.....the two powders you listed are about the only ones I would suggest to try anyhow.

Default .204 and 30-06

Mike W. is correct! Pretty difficult to get optimum results in both calibre's. We use WW748 IN THE .204. A friend uses 8208 in the .204. We use Varget in the 30-06 only with the lighter bullets. H414 with the 165's and RL22 with the heavier side, 180, 190 and 200's.

Compromised concept. Stay with the powder that works with 30-06 and find a powder that works in the 204. CFE-223 meters consistently in powder measures and should be dandy in the 204. A powder that works in both would be the best in neither.

Well the reason was if I can try them and prove they work well it would be easier to buy bulk one type only and not play around with changing the powder in the dispenser.
(I use H4895 with very good results in 204 and H4350 for 30-06.)

I am surprised this is interpreted as a compromise (before being proven no offense) because if the powders are listed for the 2 calibers they should work fine when tweaked for each individual load for each caliber according to Hodgon's table.

I guess what I was expecting from this post was to find people who found ex: Varget for both and is happy with the result.

I agree in theory that since they have different powder burn rates you may get better results....but that is to be found out in real life.

SO I guess all I can do is try, get the results, compare and if happy not worry about it.

I understand your preference would be different then mine but if I can make it work it would also suit my preference.

Proof is in the pudding ....give it a go and it might work for you. As you are likely aware each rifle and load combination will be different for each rifle they are tried in. With your eyes on Varget and H4895 for starters I think you are on the right track if I was going to try two different powders to work in both cartridges I would likely try those first.

That's the fun thing about reloading...trial and error, as long as it is done safely the results can amaze!

H4895 works great in 30 06 for heavier bullets it wont give max velocity i dont know about the 204 but it sounds like you do. If it simplifies things do it
