How would you rate the Islander's drag system compared to Sage's top notch sealed components?

I couldn't because I have never owned or tried out a sage.

I prefer the simplicity of a click pawl and a palming spool. IRs are click pawls, I could never figure the need for a sealed drag that could turn a shark in a reel used for fish under 24"

I did not realize that. I have a couple of ir1's and do really like them. One of my favorite rods is a 486 z-axis with a IR1 with sharkskin. Its my go to Crow rig. The Ir1's are jewels.

I also prefer to palm my catch.
As soon as Im hooked up....I turn the drag completely off.
I only use the drag for line out so it doesnt birds nest.
But yes....click n pawl is still my fave. And the sound is like music to me.
I luv my vintage Hardy "flyweight"....they should make a phone ringtone of a screaching fish on reel sound LOL
Thats why I only use centerpin reels on BC rivers for Salmon drift fishing.
Nothing better than to feel the fight in my hands.....
