Nicolas Sheran - Lethbridge - Mystery Fish
Was out fishing at Nicolas Sheran today in Lethbridge. I caught this little bitty fish that I was unable to identify. Unfortunately it wiggled out of my hand before I got a picture taken. It almost looked like a perch; same green and yellow colors, similar body shape. But it didn't have the distinctive stripes that a perch has, and it didn't have the spiney fin of the perch. There were small dark spots, similar to a trout, but the colors were all wrong. The fish was about 6 inches long, and I caught it on a 2 inch minnow pattern!
Wish I'd got a picture of the thing so I could show you guys. Any ideas of what type of fish it might be?

Not a baby pike. It didn't have the distinct Pike nose. And it wasn't a narrow, slim fish, like pike are.

dunno, i was leaning baby pike because of it's aggresiveness....6 inch fish hitting a 2 inch minnow pattern.
other than that...not sure what it could be?
perch colour, but no spines...dark spots...probably a trout of some kind then.
are there browns in there? could be a young brown i guess?

haha how about a trout perch...does this not exactly fit the description given? Looks like a perch without the spines on the dorsal, spots in instead of stripes, has some trout characteristics, 6 inches (typical full grown adult in western canada)...No?

I'm with you Ty. There's a reason trout perch is listed as a baitfish in the AB regs.
