Page 3, about 1/4 of the way down, there is a pretty good discussion on washing pelts.

Use borax. YES, you can use borax to clean fur, especially with regard to dried blood stains. Previously I had always washed bloody hides before drying them. In this situation using borax I simply hand wash excessive blood clot areas, wiped the area as dry as possible with a rag then board the pelt as usual. Once the skin as dried and the fur turned out I work considerable dry borax powder into the stained areas, let set for 10-15 minutes and then comb, brush and shake the borax out. Using this borax treatment method works extremely well as can be seen in the following before and after pictures. As well as removing blood stains the borax also cleans and brightens the fur.

I've tried the borax trick out and it works very well. It seems no matter how much I brush and shake I still get borax coming out of the fur. Is it safe to assume the rest will come out when it is drummed?

I used to use a washer and dryer, with great results. And after I boarded them fur out, hit them with a shop vac, set to blow. Does a great job of drying and fluffing the fine under hair.

Leave it outside for a while....or try nesting it between some spruce boughs for a few days outside

I wash all of my pelts in plastic garbage can with straight water and then I wash them a second time in straight water. I squeeze the water out and then take then outside and whip the pelt a few times to get a lot of the excess water out of the hair. I'll hang them by the nose for a bit and give them another flick outside to get a bit more water out before boarding. I then put them on the board fur in for the night and turn them the next day. As long as it's warm in the shed and I have a fan circulating the air they dry in 4 or 5 days. So far, so good.

I have to get a better system for next season but for now, that is working well for me.

If you can find an old spin dryer, they work great for drying hides after washing. I had a bit of a hard time finding one, but the hides come out almost dry.

Ya, the little old square Hoovers worked great for that.
