I don't know what ID training F&W officers have, but in a court there'd likely be a biologist to decisively tell you what it is.

if you're not sure, don't keep it.

Default trout

The picture I'm seeing ,isn't very good,I've been catching trout since a small boy, though I've never caught any cutthroat,so it looks like a brown to me.

It looks nothing like a brown. 100% cuttie.

What is it that people are seeing to say it is a brown?

Based on what you just said you might be wrong on two accounts ....

1) The fish is 100% cutthroat - absolutely no doubt whatsoever

2) You probably HAVE caught cutthroat ..... just thought they were browns I guess

It's a sad reality for a lot of fisherman. And f*** it's a shame, I know for a fact some people bonk huge bull trout thinking they're brookies. Testing (as they do with hunters) people should be mandatory for acquiring a license... But I know that subject has been beaten to death.

This is a very strong possibility.

I was referring to the people who thought it was a brown trout. I have no problem with you asking for ID.

Where was the fish caught ? Yes it appears to be a cuttie but where it was caught and a closer examination could confirm more that. Alot of our flowing waters have cutbows and they can take ona strong resembalance of either species.
