Deer shortage
Any thoughts on deer numbers to me seem down this year.Or is it the weather, the rut ,or just not having to move to feed.

Here I would say I've seen more deer than I have since 2012, very active rut.
More big bucks than I've ever seen in my life actually.

It's actually pretty terrible in my area. Lowest animal numbers I have saw since I have been hunting. We are seeing quite a few tracks, but numbers are way down. Combination of factors.. warm weather is not pushing the animals that are here out to feed. Big bright moon allows them to feed at night. Piles of hunters in some of my normal areas, usually this zone is busy in Sept and Oct, but more hunters than I have ever saw there the past 2 weeks. Predators are at a significant high. Between cougars , wolves, grizzly bears and black bears it certainly puts a dent in the population. The past 8 years or so we haven't really hunted Black bears very hard, I think this spring we are going to start back up and try to thin them out a bit. We will also be trapping wolves and coyotes, and if the opportunity arises for a cat hunt that just might happen also.

The landowner on a property in 246 I usually hunt is seeing cat tracks where the deer tracks usually are.
I haven't seen any deer, but then again I've sadly been out of commission for the past 2 weeks.

I've learned that time of year matters. I couldn't stop seeing deer in October and noticed they stuck to the deeper stuff come November (been rifle since sept 17). It helps to have months of info on your area before, perhaps making a judgement call. Had I only hunted November I would have said numbers were WAY down in my zone. Seeing over 100 in 2 days with lots of young recruitment in October told me otherwise....
We're so quick to blame the wolves and lions. However, I've seen elk completely relocate herds of dozens of deer by their sheer volume. There could be a plethora of reasons they seem to not have good numbers. I'm willing to bet the last few years of amazing winters is really paying off. We're a couple good winters away from seeing a higher volume of mature bucks too IMO

Way way down in my area hardly even any tracks or other sign.

There are deer, but I started noticing last summer that numbers were down in our area. I run about 12-16 cameras, and the amount of Does on camera was way down. I’m seeing deer, but there are less mature deer around than in previous years. I’m going hard on the coyotes this winter, there doesn’t appear to be any shortage of them. Still 10 days or so in the season, maybe a big boy will walk in front of me yet.

I'm not seeing sign in my usual areas. Found some new spots with lots of tracks so I've been hanging around those... yet not seeing any deer. I'm guessing full nocturnal.
What I've really noticed is a lack of eyes in fields and ditches while I'm driving. I usually see numerous deer (and at least one close call a season where I'm high speed stopping). But this year? Very, very few.

Deer everywhere in my area. They are coming right through the back yard and the bush around me is practically paved with deer crap on the trails. I expect a die off if the winter is hard.

Agreed, one of our quarters has had 16 deer taken off it and there still are too many!

I'd be happy to help with that problem. I've been out 6 days without anything to show for it.

Deer numbers
I have noticed a reduced number of Whitetails in 214 this year. I am seeing lots of Mulies. Usually I have 10 to 50 WT feeding on the area just west of my home close to dusk but this year I don't think I have seen any. There are three quarters that are heavily hunted south of me. I have been seeing the same trucks parked there day after day which leads me to believe they are not shooting anything. On a weekend I could always tell when the guys showed up as the Deer would high tail it north across my place to hide out in the forest north of me. Again ... nothing. Some of the lands around me have seen some change of use the past couple of summers from haying the land to more intensive grazing. I suspect this has a lot to do with it.

My area actually had an abundance of does and young bucks this year.
In comparison to last I haven’t seen as many big deer but I only hunted a few days compared to last as well.
2 days in the field compared to 20.

The zone I hunt tag numbers were increased in past years. With a tough winter and higher tag numbers MD numbers are down and WT are way down.

Normal amount but they're getting smarter, they're not coming out until after dark. Only saw 1 year old bucks during shooting hours.
