Default Canadian Military R&D

Good news and no doubt useful but it would be pretty hard to get more stereo-typically Canadian than this.

Who know where it could end?
Maybe we could train moose for bomb detection, cod to place mines on enemy ships and snowshoe ground radar?
Maybe maple syrup that produces heightened senses and incredible super human strength?

Hmmm, I think I like that ^ one the best ... then all our soldiers would be Super Hero; 'Captain Canuck' !!!. And you can bet the Yanks don't have that technology yet!

Anyways, I'll take a stab at the subject of developing 'Stealth Snowmobiles' (article in post #1). I think they are waaay out to lunch on trying to add an electric motor and heavy batteries, to a snowmobile that already has a gas engine and gas tank ... the damn things would just weigh far too much! I think they would be much better off just adding a silencer to the exhaust system of the existing gas engine. That technology already exists!

My two pennies,

Someone has too much time on their hands in Ottawa. This MIGHT be needed IF:
1. ...we decided that war with Russia over the arctic was likely, and

2. ...we already had stealth planes and ships. This is like giving M-16's to cavalry. Better guns than you had before, but you're still going to get masacred by the guys with the planes and tanks. LOL

I'm loath to criticize ant military advancement or edge but you do have to wonder sometimes.

Honestly... it sounds like some guy in R&D trying to save his job or the brain child of some special ops guy that wants all the bells and whistles...just in case.
Next he'll want jet packs and other 007 stuff.
I'm pretty sure that the military itself would rather see reliable bulk troop movement vehicles. The guys can be dragged behind on komatiks or skis to a drop off point then put in their assault or whatever.

If the core Army folks thought this was that important they would have spent more time trying to keep their main recce, assault and troop transport vehicles quiet.
Anyway...if they do develop it we'll then learn that it is only reliable above -10 C or has a range of 2 kms or something like that. (Murphys Law)

It may sound like a funny idea right now but if bin laden had been hiding in the arctic we would have wished that we had it sooner.

It's more or less stealth on a budget as I see it.

Fighter aircraft...........Nope.

Submarines...........Nope.

Snowmobiles.........Yup, we can afford ONE of those!

Well, I guess that it'd give us Canadians "stealth" bragging rights.

Wouldn't help with Bin laden.

I do believe it was exactly that sort of out of the box thinking that brought us sniffer dogs, mine hunting dolphins and cell phones.

Perhaps if more folks dared to dream we would have less time for fighting.

Maybe we're gearing up to invade Russia. Do you think that this could cause international tensions?

In a round-about way, you have hit on something there ^ ... something that Canada is slowly starting to practice! A famous U.S. President from another century said it best -
"Walk softly and carry a big stick." Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt 1858–1919
