Default Heart Bursting

Got something I gotta share with you guys...

Been tutoring for the last 30 yrs, since I retired 2 yrs ago I have been able to put more time to this hobby. My regular program was shut down due to funding so had the wife put an ad in her workplace bulletin offering free tutoring.

Ended up working with 7 kids at different levels, in some cases the kids were failing (test scores 40% or less). Just got a note from 2 of the kids that worked their ass off, wrapped up their math & sciences in the low 90s, final grades were A's. The effect on their confidence was tangible. 2 of the kids were special needs so their growth is especially meaningful.

I was clear that the tutoring was free (has been since I started), a couple parents missed that and gave me Thank You cards with gift cards inside. Will be converting them to smaller value Tims cards that will be given to First Responders...I've done this before.

Weird feeling telling a cop or fire truck to pull over but feels good afterwards.

My heart is full

Zeke

Good on you Zeke. I am sure those kids will remember your work well into their latter lives. If a man can make people remember them many years after he has done something.

You might very well have helped keep those kids from a downward spiral and ending up on the streets. Literally life saving.
Good work.

Excellent contribution to society. The kids you have and are helping will be far better off personally because of your dedication, as will society overall. Tremendous way to give back and pay it forward. Thanks.

A great Nobel gesture.

In Calgary tutors are charging $55/hr.

Great job and good on you.

Having our son work with a math tutor and knowing the difference they can make on the success scale for a young person going forward --- you are doing a great job. Well done and a virtual tip of the morning coffee to you.

Awesome, Zeke!

Good to see you are helping in the math and sciences field. Subjects that some kids struggle with initially, but with the extra help you can see the light bulbs start to go on.

I spent most of my career in the sciences in post secondary. I have seen it countless times when young people get over that initial learning curve hump, then take off and there is no stopping them.

Nice work.

Someone once told me that giving one's time means much more that giving money.

Smile Good for you

I was thinking of excuses that I could give to get out of my volunteer work and thanks to you, I'm going to stick with it. Thank you.

Exactly!
Our time here is short. What we leave behind in the memories of children is what lives on.

BZ, you have done incredible work. May it pay great dividends in this life, and the next.

The part about the light bulbs going on can be one of the most rewarding things a teacher can experience.

Well done!

Agree completely. The very best a person can leave behind is a raft of folks who remember you for the help and mentoring you gave them. Most other markers of sucess are fleeting at best.

Default Thanks

Folks, I can't tell ya how much your kind words mean to me...it's all the motivation I need to continue on my current path.

So let me take this opportunity to turn this onto you...i invite you to post what you have done to help others or (even better) what you propose to do in the future...you'd be surprised how much impact the smallest act can have.

I'll give you an example...let's call him Trampoline Justin, no relation to the PM, just a gifted hockey player terrible at math. He played midget AA locally, team rule was if you didn't pass school, you were benched. Worked with him from Sept to Dec one year, kid worked his ass off and it showed. At Xmas he gave me a gift card...I returned it, told him to take his parents to dinner instead and asked him to show me how he would use his talents to help others. He took the bait and ran a winter clothing drive amongst his team mates, still goes on. Last I saw him he was playing NCAA and would likely be drafted.

Consider this a challenge...how will you respond? Nothing is too small.

Zeke
