Default Tanning

Well Western has lost my business now with inflated prices and half arsed product with my fur.
Anyone have an option for decent prices and getting good fur back with no holes in it?
I am thinking shipping to Manitoba or Sasktachewan. I hear prices can be better there.
Any ideas guys?

You can turn them into the ATA in Westlock and they ship them to International Tannery in Winnipeg. Prices increased significantly last year though. $90 for a case skinned fox now. I haven’t put in a ton of fur there but I haven’t had any issues with the quality of their work.

Rod is in Black Diamond a bit of a trip for you up there but he does great work. I have many pieces done by him. He is a trapper and does excellent job on Fox and smaller game.

Do the permits from AEP cost anything? Last month I put in 2 coyote, one fisher and one fox to the ATA. Their cut was $15/coyote and $20 each for the fisher and the fox. For $55 I don't think that the savings after the shipping costs is worth my inconvenience. I suppose that depending on what and how much you were sending in it might be worthwhile though.

P.S. Some species (ie. skunk and ermine) cost less to buy at Halfords than what the tanning costs.

That is right Dave. I looked at beaver and I would be better off picking good hides and no holes in them at Halfords for the cost and bother of taking my own hides in.
And if the cost to buy weasels is cheaper than the tan price then where is the cheap tanning coming from?

The same place Halford sends your furs too.

Half way down.

Unless the deal is for large volumes, Tanneries are consuming the wholesale to retail margin, and beyond.

The bright side is that if a person can meet the environmental standards, there is a greater opening for boutique tanneries to successfully access the market.
