Does anyone actually hunt with a 30/30
I have my great grandpa's 30/30, he hunted all kinds of game in Alberta, and I am told he hunted a lot. And his only rifle was this Model 94 30/30.
Does anyone actually hunt with a 30/30 anymore?
Over the years I have only shot a few coyotes with it.

I have three buddies whose principal cartridge is the 30/30, two that use the 35 Remington, and another who has used the 44/40 for a number of years.
It's still being used as well as some other not so popular "obsolete" cartridges like t 303 British!

30/30
I used my Marlin this last spring bear hunt. Open sights, 170gr Federal Red box. I shot my bear at 115 yards square in the chest. Found him less than a hundred yards piled up. He just scored 19 14/16. The gentlemen back at camp couldn't believe I tried that. Lol. It's my go to gun for some of the farm I hunt. Face it, I'd like to reach out and shoot my deer from across the field. The reality of it is that most of the deer I shoot are under a hundred yards. The 30/30 is well capable and tried and true.

My dear old grandpa knocked down his moose and his buck last year with is 30 30. He's hunted his whole life, shot countless game with three cartridges. 30 30, 307 win, and 32 spec. He has nothing against the modern, or the whizz bang. He simple knows what works, and sticks to it. I bet there are countless stories similar.

Leverevolution ammo has made that gun a game changer. Had I carried it more, it would have put down every moose I ever pointed a gun at (got one last fall) and 3/4 of all deer I've harvested.

Lever
I own one but it sits every year.just too many better, scoped options.
I've read a few places that the new hornady bullets are a "game changer" and I don't understand this. I know I'm accurate with my lever to about 150 yards. That's well within old flat nose 3030 ammo. Didn't change anything for me.

Not a 30/30 but I hunt all over Montana with a lever action 35 Remington. Hasn't let me down yet and while I reload my own I'm comfortable taking 200 yard shots with it. Used to hunt with an 06 until I got this. Different strokes for different folks. Ain't nothing wrong with using a 30/30 in my books!

A few years back when double doe tags for mule were issued, we used to reload the 30-30 with 100 gr plinkers. Then our rules were open sights, and you had to hunt horseback, dismount, hobble, and sneak up on deer to under 50 yards. Retrieval had to be by horseback too. This added a whole new dimension to hunting for me. Sometimes it took a few days to fill tag, whereas with a scoped big cal. rifle the hunt was over in half a day. A lot of fun hunting on the prairies.

I'm a 35 Rem guy but its very close to the 30/30.
The levers are great way of hunting - just make sure you put your cowboy boots on or it won't shoot straight.

I've killed a couple of does with it, it's unbeatable for carrying through thick stuff or following a bleeding animal.
Looks good, too.

Not yet, but after making the leather sleeve/cartridge holder for my Marlin 336 I've become completely smitten with it. This, plus taking up bowhunting, my goals as a hunter have changed to much closer range - which would make the little 30-30 even more appropriate.
I'm actually considering selling my beautiful lefty Sako 85 in 6.5x55...

I've hunted with other cartridges when I go out into the open fields, but my 30-30 has filled my freezer more than any other over the years.
Hands down my favorite go to hunting rifle.

There will always be 30-30 users and fans but I don't think I have personally seen one in the field for at least 10 years or more.

My friend uses one every year for deer at hunting camp but he's strictly a bush hunter. Works great from what I can see

I've killed deer with the open sight model 94. I shot a doe one year . . . . I fired a round and thought I missed because I saw the bullet hit behind the hill where she was standing. The deer took off on an all out run. I found the deer 100 yards away piled up over the top of the hill. The shot ended up being a perfect heart shot. Bullet blew right through her.

I too have my great grandfather's 30.30 in a Marlin 1893 saddle ring carbine.
Shot one bear with it and lots of small game.

Yes, big 30-30 fan here. Been casting gas checked boolits for it for the last 6 years. Got a new mould to try out this fall on a deer. Very excited!
Always looking to buy another at a reasonable price but just can't see paying $500+
I've only shot deer with mine using a 170gr Hornady but my brother and uncle have both taken moose and black bear.
And as a matter out fact I just made some cast reloads using my new to me used Lyman lube sizer.
Did I say I'm a big fan.
