Default Is the left/right division in the US real?

Folks,

This is an interesting view of reality.

http://www.salon.com/2013/11/08/tea_..._off_fox_news/

Citizens of both the right and left seem to be far to the left of the present US Politicians. Even the Tea Party is to the left of Obama.

regards,

Don

Interesting read.

"and even more fundamentally, nobody ever asks the public what they want in ways that allow them to articulate a coherent vision"

That about sums up modern politics.

"The more informed that people become, the closer they are to the problems that need solving, the more liberal they become — no matter what they call themselves, liberal, conservative, Tea Party or whatever"

False dichotomies are for the uneducated and unthinking who are incapable of critical thought.

Give a fool 2 options and they will always pick one.

I think most people want a centrist government. As a result, there is a fair bit of overlap between parties. Parties use rhetoric to try to differentiate themselves from the other guys.

You misunderstand the man once again! You do this cause you think he is different than you! He's not, just has more of a non partisan opinion! If you read closely bee guy actually has more against politicians than anyone! Only difference is he doesn't pick a party and let that blind him! And what's wrong with questioning everything! It's pragmatic and an excellent survival skill!

No, it's his snide and arrogant way of conversing a lot of the times that annoys me.

People are not where th media would like to pigeonhole them. Their are a lot of people on this forum if the media didnt pigeonhole people for them they wouldnt know how to judge them. The idea of where the people are politicaly the media never knows that they are as predjudiced as an ao forum member. For example the media frenzy over the senate i dont think its going to change many votes people know there is a lot worse going on that the media wont touch because they are lazy or they dont think we should know about it.

I think the people are just where the media, social engineers and inner sanctum politicians who really run things want them, completely divided. If the public ever came to a consensus we'd throw them all out, left, right, and center. For corruption to continue unfettered public attention has to be diverted. We have no idea what's going on or what the agenda is. We are only shown what they want us to see.

The powers that be need to readjust given the economic and political climate. Right, left, center, it doesn't matter. The problem lie where politicians and parties refuse to readjust given economic and political uncertainty/problems/situations. The worst thing you can do is remain rigid on ideology when what you've been trying to resolve isn't working. Political and economic impass is a sign of stubbornness and leads to even more issues.

The article highlights what causes politicians of every strip heartburn.

Quote from article starts here:

When the public is asked about the budget most people express their displeasure with the idea of cutting spending in most areas, their displeasure with the idea of raising taxes, as well their belief that it would be desirable to balance the budget. This creates the impression that the public is simply a mass of contradictory feelings.”

It is no wonder why Govts are stalemated.
The only thing missing in the above the quote would " we are over-regulated". If that was included, we could present the average Albertan.

Left and right, liberals and cons... Riiiiigggghhhttt.

Has anyone actually listened to these teabaggers speak? Someone PLEASE throw Sarah Palin a globe and teach her some geography. Or put some duct tape over her mouth?

Michelle Bachmann? Seriously? She wants to take a run in 2016 but still believes the founding fathers freed the slaves? That jesus gave america the constitution? Where are they finding these idiots?

Balanced budget? Seriously. lol

I implore you, get on youtube and listen to what republicans are saying. Separation of church and state indeed. Wow.

The social cons have won the party back in the Reagan days. Ford, Nixon and even Ike were Economic conservatives St Reagan changed that when he got in in 81. Palin is A nincompoop to say the least, She's a walking talking slogan machine, All style and little substance that rouses the masses out of their money to buy her books etc.

Your grammar leaves me puzzled, do you mean there are TOO many knuckle draggers around here?

Or do you mean...TO many knuckle draggers around here...?

Written as intended.

Pretty sure the rest of the knuckle-draggers got it on the first pass.

What is your take on the false dichotomy of the left/right divide?

The terms left wing and right wing gained popular use during WW-2. After Hitler attacked Russia, and Stalin jumped on our side, the propagandists had to rationalize why we would accept a socialist/fascist dictator as a partner.

Prior to that Nazis and Communists had both been conveniently lumped into the same end of the political spectrum. The fact is Statists, which is what fascists and communists are, are one extreme and libertarians are the other end of the political spectrum. Democratic governments fall somewhere in the middle depending on how intrusive the government is in daily life.

As Bee Guy pointed out the "left wing right wing" thing is a false way to view politics, especialy in the US.

For some reason or another, I don't believe you. I think it was a grammatical error, not deliberate. And you couldn't admit to making a mistake because that wouldn't go with your position of looking down your nose at the knuckledraggers around here.
