Default My 2019 sheep are home !!

First off I would like to thank everyone who respectfully posts on here. During these times it's nice to escape to forums like this to help forget a lot of what's going on if just for a bit . I personally had best year hunting to date in 2019. I have had many great hunts over the years with my kids and close friends accomplishing many firsts and great memories . This year I hunted solo lots as my son ( usual hunting partner ) was guiding in a moose camp for 7 weeks .
So this year I was really excited to get my 17 year draw tag on my ewe and spent extra time in our sheep country. While doing this I managed to get first and probably only ram. It was one of the hardest things mentally and physically I have ever done. I had spotted him the night before but knew I would not have the time to get to him. The next morning after a somewhat sleepless night I went back looking for him. I spotted him and had managed to close to within 950 yards depite the 3 feet of snow. From there going up the mountain the snow ranged from 4 to 6 feet deep and I would shove snow behind me and take 1 step fprward. Sometimes I would try to crawl on top of the snow if it would support me but the next 600 yds took me 5 hrs. At 350 yds away I finally took the shot and down he went. It then took me 2 more hours to get to him at which time I drug him down to a safe enough spot to debone and cape. By time this was done it was beginning to get dark so I loaded everything up and began to head out. I had only made it a 100 yards, cold, exhausted and wet I knew I would not make it out. I made the hard decision to bury my pack, all meat, head and cape so I could walkout with just my rifle. Making it back to the jeep around 11pm I drove out and planned to come back in the am with snow shoes and my ice fishing sled. Again another pretty sleepless night I went back in and was happy to find everything in the snow untouched. I then loaded up and made in comparison the easy trek out. I was buy far a true test to my metal and I will never forget it. ( not much for pics as solo hunt, time and survival became factors )

On top of my ram I managed to get my ewe, shoot a full velvet mule deer with bow, get a mountain elk with my son when he got home and shoot my biggest WT to date.

I would also like to give a big thanks to Kevin and Levi at Top Notch for my sheep mount. Because of my lack of pics I will always have it to look at and remember the amazing hunting adventure. They did a incredible job as always. THANKS

Cheers everyone, stay safe and healthy
Brett

On a side note, I had thought if you drew your ewe tag, you couldn’t buy a ram tag in the same year? I know it’s like that for elk where if I draw my cow tag, I can’t get a general bull tag.

Sensational year I would say!!

Big congrats on the ram!! Only sheep hunters truly understand just how tough a hunt it can be, completely taxing the hunter both physically and mentally.

Thanks for posting

You can have both
Pretty fail safe these days as if you are drawn for licence on wimrelm it won’t let you buy tags you can’t have or double up on

What a stellar year !! Great write up as well. Good on ya to take the safe smart route and get yourself back to your warm vehicle and rested rather than get into a situation overnight compromising your safety.

My story from 2008

.I work in Suffield so see lots of big bulls constantly.Started glassing them out here last year alot to make out the biggest bull in a hurry if I come up on a group of them.Glassed 1 bull that had the biggest mass I had ever seen to go along with his 8x12 points. What a amazing animal. My theroy was early season definetly best chance at a big bull & the late season 2nd best.Out here the bulls all winter on the north end of the block come late Nov.Seen as many as 55 bulls in one group.Late season would also work good with snow on the ground.I was a priority 7 & just couldn't hold out 2 more years for the 1st season. On Nov.17 me & my 3 boys called, with 2 cow decoys a bull to within 5 yards of the north fence.I was really surprised they would still bugle that late in the year.On Nov.23 I crawled to within 100 yards of 11 bulls with 50 cows but nothing big (spikers & 2x3).On Dec. 2nd I decided to go for a drive on the north end again & spotted 3 bulls bedded down about 2 miles north of the fence line. They were right out in the flat prairie. After about 3/4 mile of walking, crawling, rolling lol (when i got tired of crawling) I was about a 100 yrds away.He was definatly the biggest in the group as the other 2 were a thin 6x6 & 4x5.I layed there for about 10 min. & decided to take a shot.Believe it,I missed. They stood up & as I reloaded my gun jammed.I pulled the clip out & thru in a single shell & shot again.Thump I heard as the shell hit,he took 1 step & I thru in another shell in my now single shot gun & put 1 more in the bread basket for safe measures.Down he went.I couldn't figure out why they didn't run after the 1st miss,I was pretty well camoued but they looked like they looking over me.When I got up they're were 20 mule deer behind me looking at the elk.My guess is they were wondering how mule deer could make such a loud noise & vice versa for the elk.I was south of the Cavendish cemetary on Hwy 555 between Buffalo & Bindloss,2 mile north of the block boundry. my elk has a amazing cape with his winter hair.Under his neck his main is 6 to 8 inches long.

Super cool to have the ram and ewe mounted together.

Thanks for taking the time to tell us the epic story.
