Question: Can I use barbed hooks in Alberta? I have heard rumors that the use of barbed hooks is not prohibited or not enforceable in Alberta any longer.

Answer: An amendment to Alberta Fishery Regulations pursuant to the Fisheries Act (Canada) removed the prohibition of barbed fish hooks on September 22, 2011; however, Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch and Alberta’s Conservation Officers continued to enforce the law, only recently becoming aware that it was removed.

At this time, officers no longer charge people for using barbed hooks and will not swear tickets issued since the change in legislation. All existing charges will be withdrawn, and all warrants will be removed from the system.

Alberta Justice is also moving to quash all wrongful convictions and refund all fines paid since the change in legislation.

In addition, all items seized or confiscated in relation to the now defunct ban on barbed hooks will be returned.

Government is working to resolve this in the best interests of everyone involved.

In the meantime, we encourage anglers to use barbless hooks until Alberta ESRD reviews the issue with respect to Alberta’s regulatory framework.

Since barbs have been aloud there are no fish left cause they got killed by bait fishermen.

I strictly Baitfish and I still de barb all my hooks .. Whats your logic behind this ?

Barbed or not ,you hooked somebody ,you sly angler.

Though I am pro barbed , I de barbed cause I catch to many

pike and hate de gorging them to get by jig back.

I was stopped and asked, and all my hooks were de-barbed, I thought it was still the law. the officer was nice and went on his way, I was talking with a co-worker today abut their experience with a roadside stop and I mentioned my stop, he said it was not enforced anymore so I google and the post I copied from here was the first to pop up. I couldn't make out the whole deal because the post turned into a smart arse bebate and im tying fly's tonight and I de-barb first. didn't mean to stir some stuff up!!!

Short answer to a complicated issue. The use of barbs in Alberta is no longer prohibited. Your method of fishing and personal ethics are the only thing to dictate whether you pinch or not.

Side question: Roadside stop checking barbs?

Hey, no worries mate.

This topic has been beaten to death...many times. Someone forgot to double tap.

Like the question posed in your quote, you can indeed use barbed hooks currently, and officers have no valid legislation under which to fine you.

If you do a couple more searches on this topic you'll find several long "discussions" regarding this specific issue as well as commentary and links to the best scientific studies on the issue of fish mortality due to barbless/barbed hooks.

You'll find that the atmosphere here is one of persecution, but there are many very knowledgable people and we manage to have fun without too many lynchings.

Either one too many, or one too few. Not sure I understand why there would be a roadside stop to check barbs. Even if it were illegal to use barbs, it's not illegal to possess...as you know.

sorry to confuse, his was a roadside highway stop...joint rcmp type thing. mine was while out fishing and officer walked up to me

there was no roadside barb inspection lol

This^ and how easily you are convinced in a pointless "fill good" regulations

If it makes you ethically superior to remove barbs on a lake whitefish rig (which you are not going to release anyway) - you should definitely do that.
But if you just want to fish them with barbs - it should be OK right now too, right now I don't debarb for LWs

For the record: I was releasing fish from barbed hooks for 30-some years and had no problems doing it (trebles give me grief though).

No worries OP ........ Bee Guy has a strange sense of humor which is taken out of context sometimes for those of you who don't know him .....

The barbed hook debate has gone back and forth since the dawn of time and there are a few camps out there with strong opinions.

At the end of the day it is your choice to do what you like, until the laws state otherwise.
