Default Are there benefits?

So just looking at augers and was wondering what would be the benefit of a 10" hole over an 8". Thoughts on this?

Its a lot nicer , you get alot more view , if your fishing for small fish like trout or perch, a 4" hole is fine, i personally perfer the 10" but you also have to make sure you have the power to drill 10" for 2 feet or more ice ....

Pro's:

You get a wider field of view

If you get a MONSTER (think 30lb) pike it will be easier to get him out.

Smaller hole contains fish when they are thrashing around.

Con's:

10" hole is perfect size for most peoples boot to go right through.

10" is big enough for alot of smaller dogs to go through

Smaller fish can flail/turn around and spit the hook

if you fish for big pike, the bigger the better, saves injury and helps get them through the ice. I actually do double 10 inch holes, last big pike I got swam right up into the tent when I went to grab her. the thicker the ice the easier it is to land them

10" is big enough for a kid to slip through, never mind a dog.

I have a 10" 3hp Jiffy and it is quite a bit heavier than my buddy's 8" 2hp Jiffy. Something to think about if you are walking on with a sleigh in tow.

10" is awesome if you drive the truck out on the lake and are after big pike though.

It can take a while to get a big fish's head turned into an 8" hole.

There isn't much difference if you just throw a hook down and hope for the best, but if you are sight fishing, going from an 8" to a 10" hole is like going from a 12" black and white tv, to a big screen with high def.

Huge benefit when sight fishing. Especially as the ice gets thicker . Bigger is better

Its all real a 32#5 Female Northern Pike from Fickle Lake on Mar 1 1985 (ex World Record Ice fishing Pole and Line beat in 2006 from same lake 33#2 by Gerald also from Hinton ) in a -23 blizzard .. and she came out a 10" hole after a hour fight .. she made 6 really long runs .. then round and round until she started to let me lead her to the hole .. she refused the hole 3 to four times so I sped her up coming into hole and up she came .. 47 inches and 26 1/2 inch girth

She was mounted by Don Peditrton Four Season studios Alberta Beach .. he like sucks all the air out and dries them in a big kiln like drier .. then painted

She is like new just dust

10 inch hole if your hunting Pike

David

in a 10" hole ive had allot of walleye spit the hook in the hole and turn around and ,gone.in a 8"hole they couldlnt turn themselves around.i could reach in and pull them out by the gills.these were larger walleyes.in thicker ice, like 3-4 foot when I lived in Yellowknife.i remember it would spit the hook in the hole.id put another minnow on the jig, clean out the hole and there it was staring up at me.couldnt get turned around.

10in. are banned on most lakes because of potential of kids and dogs falling in. I can sell you an adapter for your ten that will drill an eight.

please think of the kids

Lol. I'm pretty sure there's no ban on 10" augers anywhere. Where did you read that?

I think he wanted to sell him an eight inch auger without a handle for a ten inch.

Your adapter is good for square holes.

I hear ya pal. but I am not your dad so you are going to have decide tthe size of hole for yourself. I know its a big decesion. but sleep on it .
you can always upsize your hole with an axe. but its really hard to downsize regardless of all the people on here telling you you can get an adapter to downsize your drill. sounds pricy
