Are lake trout like northern pike,
When they hit 6-7+ lbs they just are not as tasty?
Never tried lakers, is there a best eating size?

Lake trout are oily. The little lakers don't even taste good without smoking.
Solution:
Dig that smoker out and smoke the oil out.
Sabre tooth Salmon on the other hand don't seem to be as oily, but that depends upon what they were eating.

You have to now how to cook them, caught a 18 lb laker a few years back ,was as firm as a steak.
If you catch a large one 10 lbs +, bring it over to my place and I will show you how to cook and eat it with you !

lake trout are from the char family and the best way to eat them is smoked for sure .pike not so much . they are drier and taste better with lots of butter .

I would agree with the 10lb range pike are tastier than lake trout however smoked the laker wins hands down....that extra oil reminds me of why sockeye is sooooo good smoked, I find laker's a close second in that category

The only way we cook trout is on the BBQ. Fill the cavity with what ever you like rosemary, sage, onions, a couple slabs of butter S/P. Wrap the whole fish with bacon slices. Cook till the bacon is past crisp --black!!! Unwrap the bacon throw the fish away and eat the bacon.Kidding trout is great. My son caught a laker 2lb+/- out of one of the Crowsnest lakes years ago it was fantastic .

I think with pike the bigger ones taste better. When I keep any pike just over 65cms they seem to turn out mushy and bland when being baked. Whenever I ate a 8lb+ pike they would be adequately firm and would be fairly rich but not overly rich tasting; hence the bigger ones tasted good IMO.

Wow, it's interesting how different tastes can be,,, I find 65cm are the best tasting, mind you they hit the pan 20 minutes after they're netted. Though we ate a 10 pounder that was truly stunning, but once again, that one came from a lake with a good change over of water.
As for lakers, put them on a broiling pan if they're big or smoke on higher heat and don't over soak your wood chips.

Lakers taste some what "gamey". You either love it or hate it. I fry them in beer batter and oil, unhealthy and really good. I don't mind the strong taste, most fish don't have any flavour so lakers are nice.
