Default Shotgun hunting

Does anyone on here hunt deer or other large game with a shotgun ? Are you using a smooth bore or a dedicated slug gun with rifled barrel? Do you use a 12ga or a 20ga? Do you use Foster style slugs or Sabots? Buckshot?

Is the shot gun your go to or is it just used where zone regs demand it.

I have a savage 212 rifled bolt action 12 gauge and I use it in 212 for the late season deer and cow tags, accurate to 150-200 yards and lots of knockdown power. I’m shooting Remington accubond sabots 2 3/4” and I love the terminal performance. I also use it in some of the thick bush areas I hunt in the north.

Always wondered about the slugs, don't you end up losing a lot of meat?

Buck shot is excellent for pushing bush! I always keep my shotgun with 00 in my truck for those thick brushy areas. Got a doe last year with a shotgun and I don’t think I could have got my min 3 power scope on her fast enough at 15 yards when she stood up. Makes for calling coyotes in tight areas fun too!

Curious about meat loss as well although I suspect it wouldn't be too bad based on my experience with 4570 which was in my opinion less meat damage than a 308. Not sure I would be comfortable with buckshot unless it was under 25yrds

Always found less meat damage with a large slow moving projectile than the lighter faster ones. Have shot several animals with 12 g slugs and other than a large hole Going in and out from the size of the slug, you can pretty much eat up to the hole. My 270wsm results in a lot of bloodshot meat if your less than 100 yards away.

I have shot more than a few deer and two moose with a 12 gauge slug and have had no issues either killing or with meat damage .
Guns were for the most part smoothbore pumps or SxS guns.

Way less meat damage than my faster centerfires, one big hole with less bloodshot meat around the wound. Most meat damage I’ve ever seen was on a speed goat shot with a 22 nosler (sask), personal brief is that bullet velocity and construction usually translates to the most meat damage.
