Default Tiger Trout Survey

Guys,

Although a whole bunch of us have been told that the process was done, here we go again with another survey.

The ugliest part is the back door attempt to have the only C&R lakes revert to a kill fishery.

Sneaky little suckers. Guess they didn't learn a thing from the last election. Sneaky gets you turfed.

Do one lake or do them all.

regards,

Don

I know very little about the lakes surveyed. Do these lakes currently have healthy populations of prolific fish? Would introducing tiger trout affect current populations, or could they live harmoniously?

These may be silly questions I know...

All the trout lakes in question are stocked on an annual basis because there is no or very limited natural recruitment

I see Muir lake listed. It has a 1 over 50 in effect already I believe.

Why would they introduce tiger trout anyways? ie why not just stock with rainbow or brown?

Diversity. Plain and simple.

"Variety is the spice of life!"

Some of their lake choices are disappointing but hey, you can't please everyone.

Why not stock some Tigers, variety is the spice of life. There are a tremendous amount of lakes and ponds that rainbows can be fished from, there is no danger of losing the stocked rainbow fishery in Alberta. I don't see the problem with mixing it up a bit in a small handful of them, I would love to be able to catch one one day.

As to keeping fish, my opinion is usually not a popular one: if you want to catch and release some stocked fish and maybe take 1 home for a treat, that's fine but my tax dollars should not go towards feeding your family. If you want enough fish for that, go buy some at the supermarket and leave me and my tax dollars out of your grocery budget, fishing is a hobby not a way to "save" money on food. Less fish kept = less stocked to maintain fish numbers and angler success as well as increasing opportunities for trophy fish plus the cost of the entire program goes down which opens up additional opportunities to stock even more lakes for all to enjoy. My opinion max 1 fish limit or C&R from stocked waters period.

Guess you all better read the survey.
The C&R lakes are proposed to return to a kill fishery. That is in spite of the hundreds of communications made by a myriad of anglers regarding the C&R issuer that resulted in holy crap .... a couple of lakes that are C&R. This is frankly just another game. Looks a lot
loke the barbless crap. Just another game.
And you are bang on right about me being ****ed about the quality of fishery produced by the experts paid by the Crown. If these experts existed in the private sector a whole lot of them would be gone. Am I pleased that they are still employed - nope.

You will note I have a real name and don't hide.

X2 It's Alberta, keeping five fish and cleaning out stocked lakes in a matter of weeks makes no sense. We just don't have the water to feed Albertans fresh fish. I wrote this in the comments section of the surveys I did.

Although keeping stocked trout may keep some pressure off wild fish. That would be my worry changing the limits in stocked lakes...

I have done every survey and read every sentence. And I can't for the life of me see this sneaky underhanded BS that Don Anderson keeps referring to. Everything is right there for us to see and we even have a chance to have our voices heard. Don we've already heard enough from you...

Some of my biggest fish come from popular put and take fisheries. You get some incredulous glares when you hold up a 22" fat ass trout and then turn it loose.

Oh really, and you make the rules?

Maybe my exposure to years of Govt Games has jaded my take on Govt. After years of pressure on by a large number of anglers on Govt to get C&R on Beaver Lake and to change the regulation on Ironside Pond is obviously a step backward.
Rather than attempting to make Alberta's Fisheries the "best they can be', we see yet again the Govt aspiring to mediocrity.

Don - who doesn't stay quiet as Alberta's fisheries suffer.

That is your opinion. I'm guessing that many folks on the forum have heard quite enough of you!

The biggest problem we face and some of us can't seem to get their heads around is the overwhelming numbers of meat fisherman whose only reason for fishing is to catch and keep their limit of fish from these lakes/ponds, some of them do it daily or weekend after weekend. I guess the gov't values their licence moneys and doesn't want to lose it, OR they know that these people will keep fishing and keep fish whether they are allowed to or not so might as well try to keep those people fishing the stocked ponds and use them as a sacrificial lamb in the hope it keeps most of these consumptive fisherman out of far more sensitive to harvest rivers and streams.

So they cross browns and brooks. Why do we need them?? Not clear why we need to introduce non-native fish to compete with the ones we already have. If they can compete against carp let's introduce them to do so in bodies of water carp have invaded. But other than that I see no point and some potential harm.

I'm thinking I'd rather hear the voice of someone who has been an advocate for better fishing in Alberta for more than 40 years than someone who can come up with nothing more than name calling.
Keep it up Don, your hard work and tireless efforts to educate and inform is always appreciated.

Northern Yaker;I started to attend Rnd.Tbl mtg's 4 yrs ago. There are things ,that I believe are still on the mandate list. One was to create more QSF opportunities in the prov.I thought that with the new young blood mgr. of fisheries. That he would pursue that which was mandated by the minister.Well now coming up too yr. 5 the QSF'S are under attack from within fisheries itself. It took 3 different mtg's for this new administrator to follow thru on a request,to just see an updated list of QSF'S.I thought we had a bit of hope when Robbin Campbell was appt'd minister. He actually allowed, for the acquisition of the AF3N strain to come into our fisheries. He[Robbin] was replaced,as was the hole party. We'll have to see if the NDP even allow for a RND.TBL.So there is some of the sneaky.C&R was agreed to at that tbl.for Beaver LK.Now there asking for a kill fishery. What's next in the survey, implement barbless, seniors require a full fishing lic...Survey SAYS....

Like Bushrat said, I think that people exploiting stocked trout lakes is much better than people taking out of native cutty streams. I agree a limit of 5 is pretty high (maybe 3 would be more reasonable), but keeping stocked, non-native fish isn't the biggest concern to the ecosystem. These lakes are already unnatural, but don't misconstrued that as negative, anti-stocked lake statement :P I'm a catch and release fisherman, so don't think I'm supporting exploitation of govnt stocked water bodies.

I've got to be honest and say that I can't see the back door attempt to revert C&R lakes to kill fisheries either.

According to the posted Fish Management Objectives, they are even going to create another one with a proposed zero limit on Dillberry pond.
