Default Remington Model 7 **Update post #20**

I bought a Remington Model 7 SS earlier this year. I believe that it was manufactured last year. Anyway, most Model 7 SS I have in a non-magnum configuration came with a 20" barrel. This new one came with a 22" barrel even though the box has 20" on it. Called Gravel and was informed that the rifle was suppose to have a 20" barrel, but the parts list had it having a 22" barrel. Anyone else here run into a non-magnum Model 7 SS with a 22" barrel?

Never seen a factory rifle with wrong length barrel.
What caliber is it?

I've put a few together with mountain rifle barrels (22"). They point considerably better than the 20" versions. Be happy, that's a great mistake to have happen.

Looking at performance, looks like the .260 Remington would be better off with a longer barrel. Still curious as to the mistake.

Have you shot it yet? I agree. A 22" ain't such a bad thing.

My guess is they probably cut mountain rifle barrels off for the 7's and yours missed the chop. The two contours are identical except the extra 2" on the mountain rifles.

Am I to assume what they published as the rate of twist would still be the same? I'm actually glad this is a 22" barrel as I was getting discouraged reading that a 20" barrel may not be the best for a 260.

Mark your cleaning rod, push a tight fitting patch thru and measure the distance it takes to make a rotation.

I think the 20 vs 22" velocity arguement is highly over rated. I doubt you would ever notice a difference in a hunting rifle. But the 22" does handle better - shockingly better even though those 2 extra inches are pencil thin.

Sounds like you have a nice rig. Drop it into a wildcat and it will be very close to 5lbs even.

Haven't shot it yet. Had a couple of rifles that I was tinkering around with before I got around to this one. Just bought a set of Talley's for it and now have to decide on a 2-7X33 or 3-9X33 Ultralight Leupold VX2. Have both and may play around with both on the range.

Same for me on the longer barrels.

I'm not so much after higher fps rather more barrel to limit kick back.

Not sure if others noticed over the years that a 20" too 26" keeps iron flater on dis-charge,,, and a custom 28" to 29" even more so.

I had the light weight's back in the day, not for me as they kick like a mule, so I'd drill into wood stock and add weight to keep it short, or add longer barrel.

Now days I buy the 7 too 9 lb factory rifles with at least 24" or 26" to simmer things down, I never pack rifle too far so it all works out.

No big deal as I tape off the barrel end as I use it as a buck-brush stick clearing my path, Ha.

Find what works in the quest of good times.

Pal Don.

To be honest I dunno what to make of this? I have had 22" barreled rifles that are heavy, and longer barreled rifles that are light. "Keeping iron flat" as you put it is more a product of stock design than barrel length in my experience.

Never shot a model 7 but I've owned several rifles with 20" barrels and I with all of them I liked how they handled. If I was to purchase a model 7 and NOT get a 20" barrel I would be a bit upset, since as far as I can determine the short barrel is more or less the whole point of the model 7? My wife used a 6.5x55 with a 20" barrel and a low powered scope for several years and it was an excelent deer gun, I cant help but thinking the .260 would be much the same.

Yes it did. That may be why I got it for such a good deal. Less than a year old.

That just goes to show the quality control at Remington now a days when they can't even get the box stamped properly.

Did you ever contact Remington and ask them about your rifle?

Default Update!!!

So, Gravel got back to me and got some answers from Remington. I said earlier that I thought it was a late production 2015, but it is in fact a new production 2016 model. The production manager indicated that they run 250 at a time, so they may have run out of 20" barrels and substituted a 22" barrel.
Voila, now I have an unusual rifle!!!! Twist is still 1 in 8.

Now, what scope should I put on:

Leupold VX-ll 2-7X33 LR duplex or a VX2 3-9X33 Ultralight wide duplex

Weight difference between the 2 is a minimal 2.4 ounces

Wanted some input on the different reticles though.

To bring a thread back from the dead.

Just bought a new 2018 production Model 7 SS 260. Also has a 22" barrel. Box says 20"
