Default 338-06 conversion question

I have an old 30-06 (rem 700) and I’m toying with the idea of rebarreling to 338-06. The gun has some sentimental value so I don’t want to make a bunch of extreme alterations. My question is, would I have to alter anything else other than screw on a new barrel to make it into a 338-06?

Thanks

If you have the barrel contoured the same as the factory no modifications are necessary

You could also do a re-bore. RKS does them and no alterations are necessary.
Nice cartridge.

You will need to get the .338 barrel chambered for the cartridge and installed by a gunsmith. He will cut it to your desired length as well. Mine is 21" and suits me well.

Quickest will be to buy a .338 barrel blank from Jury, Benchmark, JC, International etc. They might even have one on the shelf if you're lucky. You can buy SS or chromemoly if you prefer. Chromemoly barrels are usually in the 'white' and will need to be blued.

Tell your barrel maker/supplier that you want the factory contour for your rifle.

Your 'smith can provide options such as bedding the action and free floating the barrel, trigger work, etc.
Good luck!

I have a 338-06 built on a Rem 700 CDL action, using a #4 contour SS Benchmark barrel. The action was trued, and a surface ground recoil lug installed by AC Douglas Gunsmithing in Saskatoon. It was bedded using Devcon Steel putty, and the trigger is at 3 lbs. I worked up loads with CCI 200 primers, Ramshot Big Game powder, and 200 grain Nosler Accubonds or 210 Partitions. Brass was resized Federal, Winchester and Remington. I also made up loads using Weatherby 338-06 brass - it's worth the money, IMO.
The Accubonds are right at, or slightly above MOA, and the Partitions are consistently sub-MOA. There is about a 1/2 to 3/4 elevation difference between the two loads at 100 yards. I have not had a chance to put the loads over a chronograph, as I don't have one. The more I shot it, the better it seemed to get, accuracy-wise. This rifle is going to South Africa with me next year...really looking forward to using it on game.
