For me it all comes down to "what are you looking for?" If the primary reason that you waited 15 years was to hang a large bull on the wall, some of the prairie zones are probably your best bet.

Myself, I'd rather Moose hunt in the foothills zones during the rut. Hunting Moose on the prairie like you'd hunt antelope or mulies just doesn't do it for me. Regardless, with a P-15 I'd sure be looking forward to the upcoming season.

I hear ya! I believe 232 is something like a p-9 for bull moose. Its ridiculous with the amount of moose holed up in the zone especially when you consider mule is only like a p-6 with their dismal numbers.

Mech1980

5K and I'll guarantee a 50" plus bull. No kill, no pay
First week of Oct. Grande Prairie area

You'll never get a better deal on a guided hunt.

That's very generous of you waterfowler1969. He is certainly free do whatever he wants. I was only offering a half price hunt because he is a resident. That's all.

No worries mech, I'm sure lots of people will be willing to help out or offer advise. Just figured I'd offer you a great chance at a great bull. Good luck on your search and hunt

As an outfitter it is $4000 at half price. If I can figure my stuff out I will help him get a 50"+ bull.

Here is a bull my buddy was chasing October November. Prairie moose

I seen two bulls this season I would bet good money were over the 200 inch mark while deer hunting in the parkland. They are definetly here but killing them seems to be a chore...

Mech...this is easy if you looking for a trophy.
Get in touch.

If we get the proper spring weather, I would be looking for 60"
If not 50" will have to do.
Smallest of the 5 we took was 52.

My hunt lasted exactly 10 seconds. Not the best hunt, but what a trophy.

Those moose in 400 would be considered a Shiras moose if they were just a bit further south. I think if I had that much priority I would try and draw in 400 and then try and get a tag for a more northern zone after that. Then if not technically correct, for all intents and purpose you would have both varieties of Shiras and Canada moose.

Nice bull your brother got. I shot a bull in 400 that looks about like the twin of this moose. They definitely are a somewhat different animal than moose from further north in body size and horn configuration in my experience.

That wmu 400 Moose is Canadian according to B&C, and Shiras according to SCI.
The outfitting industry lobbied to have these southern moose declared Shiras for marketing purposes. The Alberta SCI boundary is south of Hwy 1 and west of Hwy 2.

Any of the southern foothills/mountain wmus will produce 50" bulls. There are plenty of big bulls living on land where the real challenge is getting permission to hunt.

This is a 44" bull taken in 2012 in the SW, and definitely was not the largest one seen that fall. With a Grizzly on the next hill and a pack of wolves sighted just hours earlier a mile away, the bull was shot at sunset on a very warm Oct. evening. Leaving it overnight was not an option. We sure were glad to have the dog stand guard while quartering and packing the moose out.

Default Shiras /Canada

Interesting they are seen differently by the clubs. I never new they had a line of distinction that way , wonder where the biologists sit on that line. I had for a long time thought 400 would be my first choice and the last couple of years thought 402 might be a better option. But looking closely at the stats. it looks like it may take a 16-17 to get a tag all because I missed 1 year getting my draw in. If I would have not missed that 1 year I would have had a tag in 2012 but now because I was late and missed the draw deadline I'm probably looking at 16-17 . So as a result, I have been re-thinking what to do . This thread has been great and I wanted to say we all enjoy the photos and post's so thanks guy's . Kind of neat to learn something like classification along the way as well and see some of the great bulls taken. The Prairie Parkland hunts were never really on my Radar and I'm finding a lot of ideas I never really considered from your comments along the way.. Thanks..

I didn't realize that sci considered those moose as Shiras but was aware of the BC boundary. I also didn't know that the outfitting industry tried to change the boundary for them. Thanks WB. Interesting stuff. Nice moose.

Here's one of my two bulls from 400. Back then the draw wait time was much shorter. 15 years is a long time to wait for a draw. Hope you the best of luck wherever you end up hunting your moose.

The parkland zones close to home have been kind to us the last few years. Lots of hours with family and lots of sightings. There are better prairie zones for sure. I believe several of the 160 WMU including 166 were flown this year so I would contact the local bio. Moose aren't my thing but next time I would prefer to hunt big bulls in the rut in the boreal but if I had P15 I would hunt somewhere I could hunts lots or one of the 160s..And talk to Jamie.
